The Peabody baseball team picked up a 1-0 non-conference win at Malden Catholic Wednesday. Ryan Knight gave the Tanners all the offense they needed in this one with a RBI single in the top of the first inning. Jordan Anzuoni scored Peabody’s lone run. Anzuoni started the rally with a single and took second base on Mike Tasney’s sac-bunt before crossing home plate.
On the mound, Nick Fiore dominated from start to finish. Fiore tossed a four-hit shutout and struck out four with one walk.
“Nick controlled both sides of the plate,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said. “He had a great mix keeping Malden Catholic off balance. They hit some shots right at people but Nick did a good job keeping them off balance. The biggest thing was Nick only walked one batter, in the last inning.
“Defensively, our outfield played great,” Bettencourt said. “My middle infielders, Jordan and Calvin Ingemi played great. We played good defense. Our team’s built around defense.”
The Tanners (9-10) now turn the page to Thursday’s (3:30) game at Winthrop. Peabody needs two wins to qualify for the state tournament. The Tanners host St. John’s Saturday (6:30) for an exclusion game and host Marblehead Sunday (12).
“It starts Thursday,” Bettencourt said. “Marblehead doesn’t mean anything if we don’t beat Winthrop. The focus for us has to be on Winthrop. We have to show up ready.”
