Highlighted by Grace Arthur’s 200th career assist, the Marblehead girls lacrosse team earned a big win in NEC play with a 17-4 victory over Medford Tuesday afternoon. Arthur had four goals and six assists to lead the offense in the win.
“Grace is a selfless player who puts her teammates first,” said Marblehead assistant coach Shannon Beaton. She’s always making her teammates better.”
Also contributing for Marblehead were Maddie Erskine (three goals), Sara Campbell (two goals, one assist), Lydia Bongiorno (two goals), Grace Doody (two goals), Hadley Wales (two goals), Callie O’Neil (one goal) and Abby Kalinowski (one goal). Goalie Elizabeth Driscoll had three saves.
Marblehead is now 13-4.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Peabody 18, Gloucester 2
Olivia Kiricoples (five goals, two assists) and Colleen Crotty (four goals, assist) led the way for the Tanners, who improved to 11-5 on the season.
Hailee Lomasney (three goals, two assists), Maddy Lomasney (two goals, assist), Catherine Manning (two goals, assist), Jenna Rigol (goal) and Amber Kiricoples (goal) also found the back of the net.
Olivia Lavalle (two saves) and Katie Rice (three saves) split time in goal.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. John’s Prep 18, Austin Prep 1
The Eagles had 14 goal scorers on the afternoon, led by Michael Ott (two goals, one assist), Wes Rockett (two goals one assist), Dan DeLaus (two goals) and Josiah Brown (two goals). Also contributing were Jake Surette (one goal, three assists), Michael Kell (one goal, two assists), Brian Souza (one goal, one assist), Luke Brennan (one goal, one assist), Pat Keefe (one goal, one assist), Craig Yannone (one goal), Sean Gilbert (one goal), Pat Nistl (one goal), Charlie Danis (one goal) and Sarni Thomas (one goal).
The Prep (14-3) hosts Marblehead Thursday night (7).
Peabody 9, Gloucester 6
Connor McCarron led Peabody’s attack with four goals and three assists. Ryan Fera scored two goals, Trevor Smith scored one goal and Nick Patturelli scored one goal.
Austin Leggett made 10 saves and Patrick Russo won 12 of 16 faceoffs.
BASEBALL
Classical 8, Gloucester 2
Freshman pitcher Kyle Durant threw a complete game in his first varsity start. Durant struck out three and allowed two earned runs on five hits. He helped his own cause with a 2-RBI single.
Highlights at the plate included Aidan Dow (2-for-4, two RBI, run), Brendan Lannon (2-for-3, two runs, RBI), Deniel Ortiz (2-for-2, RBI), and Jared DeFillipo (1-for-4, three steals, RBI, run). Nico Galeazzi, Brett Bucklin and Dayshon Anderson each had a base hit.
The Rams (13-4) are back in action Friday (7) against English in the opening round of the Nipper Clancy Tournament.
Saugus 11, Beverly 9
Saugus fell into an early 6-2 hole after two innings but a late push propelled the Sachems to a come-from-behind win.
The bottom of the fourth was the big inning for the Sachems, as Saugus scored six runs on seven singles to get back on track with a 10-9 lead.
Skyler Smith tossed three innings. Freshman pitcher Nathan Ing, making his varsity debut, pitched two innings and picked up the win. Todd Tringale earned the saves with five strikeouts over the last two innings.
Ronnie Paolo (3-for-5), Zack Falasca (2-for-4) and Ryan Beliveau (2-for-4) carried the offense.
Saugus (12-4) swept the season series over Beverly and hosts Peabody Wednesday (4).
Peabody 5, Swampscott 4
Swampscott’s pitchers combined for 11 walks. Big Blue starter Fred Juden allowed two earned runs and six walks over four innings. Juden tallied three strikeouts.
Peabody carried a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning before Swampscott’s bats made noise. Jonathan Oriakhi, Drew Olivieri and Anthony Rakauskas each had a RBI. Dylan January launched a solo home run, his fifth of the season.
Swampscott hosts Gloucester Wednesday (6:30).
“The team battled,” Swampscott coach Joe Caponigro said. “Down 4-0, we kept grinding. Sometimes it’s not in the cards. But the story of this game were the free bases we gave.”
SOFTBALL
St. Mary’s 13, Spellman 2
At Spellman, Angelia Pepe took care of business in the circle with 16 strikeouts. Talia Smaller’s five base hits drove the offense.
The Spartans improved to 12-3 with the win.
Peabody 6, Marblehead 1
Tianna Dawe was dominant in the circle once again, pitching a complete game two-hitter and striking out nine. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Leading the offensive charge for Peabody was Kristina Rossignoll, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Emma Bloom went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, Makayla Iannalfo went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Gina Terrazzano went 2-for-3.
Saugus 7, Winthrop 2
The Sachems got another great performance from Caitlyn Wood, who pitched a complete game and allowed two runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 with one RBI at the plate.
Also contributing offensively for Saugus were Ashley Shaw (1-for-3, RBI), Kirby Dalton (1-for-2, RBI), Felicia Reppucci (1-for-2, RBI), Leah Ventre (1-for-1, RBI), Emma Howard (1-for-3) and Cat Schena (1-for-3).
Saugus (9-6) will travel to Peabody Wednesday (4).
BOYS TENNIS
Classical 5, English 0
Winners were Stephen Ong (6-1, 6-0 at first singles), Andy Ma (6-0. 6-2 at second singles), Jake Ennis (6-1, 6-1 at third singles), Adam Mariano/Jonah Hodgdon (6-0, 6-2 at first doubles) and Dan Kazimierczyk/Khoa Nguyen (6-0, 6-0 at second doubles).
Classical (8-7) qualified for the state tournament with the win.
“The kids were really excited,” Rams coach Chris Hayward said. “We just missed it by one match last year. The senior returners were motivated by that. They worked really hard.”
Swampscott 4, Beverly 1
Swampscott got wins from Justin Ratner (6-3, 6-3 at first singles), Will Talebian (6-4, 7-5 at second singles), Tate Greenfield (4-6, 6-0, 6-0 at third singles) and Jake Goldman/Matt Griffin (5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at first doubles).
Marblehead 5, Malden Catholic 0
Winners for Marblehead were Bill Ackerman (6-3, 6-1 at first singles), Dan Livtak (6-2, 6-0 at second singles), Tony Gluskin (6-0, 6-0 at third singles), Jack Curran/Dylan Freddo (7-5, 6-3 at first doubles) and Hayden Miller/Reid Tully (7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at second doubles)
Marblehead (10-4) travels to Beverly Wednesday (4).
GIRLS TENNIS
Classical 4, English 1
Winners for Classical (13-1, 11-1 NEC) were Anh Nguyen (6-2, 6-4 at first singles), Daphne Pineda (6-3, 6-0 at second singles), Abby Stafford/Lexi Ferraro (6-1, 6-3 at first doubles) and Jayden Carroca/Sophia DeFronzo (6-1, 6-0 at second doubles). The Rams celebrated their annual senior day before the match.
Marblehead 4, Saugus 1
Marblehead got wins from Jessie Munroe (8-1 at first singles), Rei Newman (8-3 at third singles), Lauren Podgur/Leah Saulnier (8-2 at first doubles) and Alix Livermore/Madeline Bowden (8-3 at second doubles).
“Our team did a nice job of showing the depth of our team,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “The non- starters came out nervous, but once they settled in to their matches they were great.”
Marblehead (13-0) hosts Beverly Wednesday (4) for its Senior Day.
The lone win for Saugus came from Kelly Gray, who won 8-3 at second singles.
Saugs travels to Peabody Wednesday (4).
Lynnfield 4, Ipswich 1
Winners for Lynnfield were Alexa Vittiglio (6-3, 6-1 at first singles), Emma Gallucci (6-2, 6-0 at second singles), Celeste Joly (6-0, 6-0 at third singles) and Grace Sokop/Gillian Skelley (6-1, 6-1 at first doubles).
