The Lynnfield baseball team celebrated its Senior Day with a 5-2 win over Cape Ann League rival Pentucket Tuesday. Senior pitcher Fernando Gonzalez took the mound and tallied 15 strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Seniors Jon Luders, Will Garofoli, Matt Fiore and Jaret Simpson carried the offense. They combined for eight hits and five RBI.
“The seniors did a great job,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said. “We had a tough loss Saturday. We had a great day of practice Monday. The kids bounced back. I have nine seniors and they contributed, which was great. It was a nice win for us to get back on track.”
O’Brien also credited seniors Cory Castinetti, Phil Tammaro, Sal Marotta and Brian Cardarelli for their efforts this season.
“The seniors have all contributed this year,” O’Brien said. “Hopefully we can continue and keep it going.”
Lynnfield (9-5), one win away from qualifying for the Division 3 North state tournament, travels to Masconomet Thursday afternoon (3:45).
“We lost to Masconomet the first time around,” O’Brien said. “We’re looking to play a much better ball game this time around.”
