The Saugus softball team picked up an 8-6 Northeastern Conference win over Beverly Wednesday.
Pitcher Caitlyn Wood went seven innings for Saugus with eight strikeouts, three walks and five earned runs. Ashley Shaw (1-for-3) and Alessia Salzillo (2-for-3) each drove in a pair of runs. Alexa Ferraro went 1-for-2 with a RBI. Emma Howard went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Beverly’s Shelby Stavis went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Abi McGovern (1-for-4, RBI) and Melanie Mason (3-for-5) also contributed.
Saugus (3-2) travels to Marblehead Friday (4).
“That’s a huge game for us,” Saugus coach Steve Almquist said. “Marblehead’s always tough.
They have great pitching and they hit the ball well. Hopefully this win over Beverly gives us a little confidence. It doesn’t get easier with Marblehead but we’ll give it our best shot.”
SOFTBALL
St. Mary’s 2, Spellman 1
Angelia Pepe pitched the Spartans to victory with 11 strikeouts. Pepe allowed just two hits.
Samantha Porazinki and Alyssa Grossi had two hits each. Jordan Sullivan and Talia Smaller each had one hit.
The Spartans (5-1) travel to Matignon Friday (3:30).
Peabody 6, Danvers 0
Tianna Dawe pitched the Tanners to their first win of the season. Dawe allowed just three hits. Gina Terrazzano, Tianna Dawe and Julianna Cimino each had a RBI.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. Mary’s 12, Arlington Catholic 1
The Spartans remain undefeated at 6-0.
Zach Barden scored five goals to lead the offense. Also finding the back of the net were Jaiden Moriello (goal), Joe O’Keefe (two goals), Dom Marino (goal), Connor Butt (goal), Nick Napolitano (two goals).
Goalie Kaden Quirk made 11 saves.
“I felt the defense did a good job,” Spartans coach Josh Field said. “Christian Lebert and Davis Kinne gave us a lot both offensively and defensively.”
St. Mary’s travels to Fenwick Saturday (12).
Fenwick 20, Williams 2
Fenwick’s Nico Pasciuto and Diego Alvarez-Segee scored four goals each. Other goal scorers were Nick Muzi (three), Derek DelVecchio (two), Stefano Fabiano, Robby Favuzza, Brett Ross, Ian Worthley, Nick Sasso, Jake Westin and Ethan Henshaw. Westin and Henshaw, both freshmen, scored their first career varsity goals.
Fenwick (7-0) hosts St. Mary’s Saturday (12).
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0
Winners for the Magicians were Billy Ackerman (6-0, 6-1 at first singles), Dan Litvak (6-0, 6-1 at second singles), Ben Farfel (6-3, 6-3 at third singles in his singles debut), Erik Stammnitz/Vittorio Mariotti (6-0, 6-2 at first doubles) and Tony Gluskin/Adam Sherf (6-0, 6-2 at second doubles).
Winthrop 4, Saugus 1
Tate Greenfield (6-0, 6-2) was Swampscott’s lone winner at third singles.
GIRLS TENNIS
Lynnfield 4, Rockport 1
Winners for the Pioneers were Megan Nevils (6-1, 6-4 at first singles), Alexa Vittiglio (6-1, 6-2 at second singles), Claire Yang (7-5, 6-2 at third singles) and Gillian Skelley/Anna Radulski (6-3, 6-1 at first doubles).
The Pioneers travel to North Reading Thursday (3:30).

Marblehead (3-0) travels to Danvers Thursday (4).
Malden 4, Classical 1
Daphne Pineda (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) was the lone winner for Classical at first singles. The Rams (3-2) hope to rebound Thursday (4) when they battle against English.
Beverly 4, Saugus 1
The Sachems hope to bounce back with a win Monday (4) when they host Swampscott.
