The St. Mary’s boys tennis team got the 2019 season started off right with a 3-2 win over Catholic Central League foe Cardinal Spellman Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans got singles wins from Brady Ryan (8-0) and Shaw Liang in third singles (8-6). The winning point came from the Spartans’ brotherly duo of Alexander and Dante Cattaneo, who won second doubles (9-8). at second doubles. The brothers battled from a 1-4 deficit and came back to force a tie-breaker at 8-8, winning that 7-2 to take the point and the win.
BOYS TENNIS
Latin Academy 4, Marblehead 1
Marblehead’s lone win came in second doubles from the team of Jack Quigley and Vittorio Mariotti.

Everett 78, Classical 58
The Rams got wins from Kevin Paniaqua in the shot put (36-21), Chase Buono in the javelin (121-3), Maxwell Gonzalez in the 800 (2:25.9), Junior Mejia in the one-mile (5:12.2) and Jyle McCarthy in the two-mile (11:57).
Salem 86, English 45
Prince Brown was a double-winner for English, winning the long jump (18-2) and the 100 (9.8). The only other winner for the Bulldogs was Mohamed Dale in the 200 (25.8).
Salem’s winners were Trevor Beaudoin in the high jump (5-4), William Beauregard in the triple jump (38-6), the 800 (2:13.2) and the 400-hurdles (1:04.5), Melkin Bautista in the shot put (37-3), Nicholas Roper in the discus (87-0), Roberto Pauleus in the javelin (114-4) and the 400 (56.6), Tyrese Elmidore in the 110-hurdles (18.3), Patrick Collins in the one-mile (5:07.9) and Chris Barnes in the two-mile (11:18.4).
Saugus 76, Gloucester 59
Kenny Okoye and Marvens Jean were both double-winners for the Sachems. Okoye took first in the long jump (17-7) and the triple jump (40-7 1/2), while Jean won both the shot put (35-4) and the discus (89-6). Other winners for the Sachems were Bruno Auzec in the high jump (5-4), Nick Ferrara in the javelin (95-2), Eric Miniscalco in the 110-hurdles (17.9), Paul Duong in the 400 (59.4) and Elijah Tapia-Gately in the 800 (2:19.2).
Swampscott 69, Danvers 67
The Big Blue earned a close win behind three wins from Joe Varghese, who took first in the high jump (5-8), the triple jump (40-5) and the 110-hurdles (17.9). Other winners for Swampscott were Zack Palmer in the long jump (17-6 1/4), Jackson Brigham in the shot put (43-8), Anton Vazquez in the discus (104-3), Jake Culliton in the javelin (154-4) and Aidan Pulaski in the 400-hurdles (1:02.1).
Lynn Tech
The Lynn Tech boys track team earned two wins in a tri-meet against Northeast and Essex Tech Wednesday afternoon.
Evlin Gonzalez had an impressive four wins on the day, taking first in the 100 (10.9), the 400-hurdles (1:42.34), the high jump (5-8) and the lone jump (18-11). Luis Pineiro won the triple jump (35-11) and Amari Gaston won the 200 (24.1). Sabastian Le-Ortiz took first in the one-mile, while Tony Mendez won the two-mile.
GIRLS TRACK
Classical 73, Everett 63
The Rams had a double-winner in Rachel Brennan. Brennan took first in the 800 (2:40.0) and the one-mile (5:59.0). Other winners for Classical were Cherish Nwoko in the high jump (5-6), Victoria Medeiros in the shot put (28-1 2/3), Chloe Kebreau in the javelin (72-11), Maysie Jean-Louis in the 110-hurdles (19.2), Keyanni Jordan in the 400-hurdles (1:23.0), Kenia Mejia in the 400 (1:10.0) and Miriam Bamara in the two-mile (14:17.0).
Classical (1-0) will run against Somerville Thursday.
English 91, Salem 40
Hannah Trahant led the way for English, winning the long jump (15-4), the triple jump (29-8) and the 400-hurdles (1:17.7). Kahlee Smith-Whelton was a double-winner, taking both the shot put (30-8) and the javelin (91-5). Other winners for English were Gzane Williams in the high jump (5-0) and the 110-hurdles (43.3), Kendra Malcolm in the 100 (11.9), Valentina Santelises in the 400 (1:15.4) and Jackie Ramirez in the one-mile (6:34).
For Salem, Anyfem Gonzalez won the discus (64-0), Sarah Cayouette-Gluckman won the 200 (29.9), Deya Arnold won the 800 (2:59.3) and Lucy Tuttle won the two-mile (14:58).
Gloucester 68, Saugus 61
Kiley Ronan earned two wins for Saugus, taking first in the long jump (14-9 1/2), and the 200 (28.0). Other winners for the Sachems were Amanda Waugh in the shot put (21-10 1/2), Samantha Martin in the discus (40-0), Jada Okoye in the 110-hurdles (18.5), Ava Fiorino in the 400-hurdles (1:15.0) and Jennifer Costa in the 100 (14.0).
Swampscott 97, Danvers 33
The Big Blue won all but one event in the victory, with Charlotte Andrews leading the way with three event wins. Andrews took first in the high jump (4-8), the triple jump (32-11) and the 400-hurdles (1:22.0). There were also three double-winners for Swampscott, with Meredith Zimmer winning the long jump (14-4 1/4) and the 110-hurdles (18.6), Ciara Espaillat winning the shot put (26-6 1/2) and the discus (72-5) and Paige Kennedy winning the 100 (13.7) and the 200 (29.2). Other winners for Swampscott were Ella Sprague in the 400 (1:08.4), Ashley Martin in the 800 (2:40.9) and Haley LaKind in the two-mile (14:12.0).
Lynn Tech
The Tigers split their tri-meet Wednesday, beating Northeast and then losing to Essex Tech. The Tigers had a double-winner in Michayla Lawrence, who won the shot put and the 200. Felicity Blaney won the long jump, while Iranis Julio took first place in the javelin.
BOYS LACROSSE
Stoneham 8, Saugus 7
Saugus (0-1) dropped its season opener at Stoneham. Ryan Pugh and Mario Desimone scored two goals each. Andrew Cipriano and Joe Cross scored one goal each. Brendan McCabe dished three assists.
