The Swampscott Police Department is warning residents of a widespread phone scam.
The department posted the alert on their Facebook page Wednesday afternoon. The phone scam involves someone pretending to be a woman named Karen Jones, who works for the police department.
The scammer is reportedly calling residents and telling them to contact the U.S. Legal Defense Fund at 781-596-1111 because there is a warrant for their arrest. Swampscott police officers want the town to know that there is no “Karen Jones” who works for the department.
If there is a warrant for your arrest, the department will not call you, they will just arrest you, read the social media post. They also stated the department’s real number is 781-595-1111.
