LYNN — As two Lynn high school basketball teams finished their seasons in championship games Saturday, the 42nd annual Lynn Elementary Basketball Tournament was still in full swing with the last of the first-round contests at Pickering Middle School.
Action kicked off with the Drewicz boys taking on the Cougars from Cobbet. Drewicz was able to prevail 38-11 behind Javhian Martinez’s 24 points. Bryan Gelano led Cobbet with 6 points.
The next game was the first of two Division 2 girls matchups pitting Lincoln-Thomson against Brickett. Lincoln took a commanding 18-4 lead into the second half but Brickett went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to just 2 points. In the end, Lincoln-Thomson’s high-powered offensive juggernaut, Dayana Hios Edwards (28 points), proved to be too much and the Tigers prevailed 27-22. Kalani Norris (10 points) and Heidy Gervacio (6) were the high scorers for Brickett. Lincoln takes on Callahan next Wednesday at 5:15.
The second of two Division 2 girls games was a battle between Shoemaker and Sewell-Anderson. Shoemaker was in full control from the opening tip and was able to secure the 15-4 win. Bella Owumi scored 9 points for the Sharks and teammate Ava Todisco added 4. Darnisha Dorceous and Victoria Pena had a basket apiece for Sewell-Anderson. Shoemaker takes on Lynn Woods in the second round on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Division 1 Boys action continued with Harrington playing Hood. Harrington led this one wire to wire and won 37-9. Camron Thornton had 21 for Harrington. Carlos Nunez scored all of Hood’s 9 points.
The first round concluded with the Ford Falcons taking on the boys from Ingalls. Ford built a lead in the first half that proved to be insurmountable and they cruised to the 27-15 win. Travis Sanchez (10 points) and Wesley Crisostomo (9 points) were the high scorers for Ford. Keith Chandler had 7 points for Ingalls.
Second round action begins next Wednesday at Pickering Middle School at 4:00 p.m. Admission to all tournament games costs $1.
