There were plenty of local highlights at Saturday’s state swimming and diving championships at Boston University.
In Division 2, Fenwick’s Sophia Lumino won first place in the 100 freestyle at 53.34 seconds. Lumino also placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:10.01). Catherine Christuk placed 23rd in the 200 freestyle (2:04.97) and 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.79). Meredith Yuhasz finished 17th in the 500 freestyle (5:32.34). Analiese Jezowski finished 24th in one meter diving.
The 200 medley team of Christuk, Lumino, Sabrina Botthof and Emily DelBene placed 13th (1:57.56). The 400 freestyle relay team of Christuk, Yuhasz, Lumino and Audrey Waldinger placed 17th (3:56.74). Marblehead’s Amanda Wager won first place in the 200 freestyle (1:54.22) and finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.58). Swampscott’s Elizabeth Dokina finished first in the 100 breastroke (1:04.56).
In Division 1, Carly Mendonca finished fourth overall in the 100 backstroke (59.27). Mendonca’s time set the Lynn Classical school record and the Lynn girls record. It also qualified her for the YMCA National Championships. Mendonca also placed 14th in the 100 butterfly (1:00.65).
English’s Mary Lawlor placed 24th in the 100 backstroke. Hannah Trahant placed 25th in diving. Caroline Zuffant placed 25th in the 500 freestyle.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Classical 64, Cathedral 50
At Cathedral, the Rams improved to 14-6 in their final game of the regular season. Dyrrell Rucker led the scoring with 27 points. Jeff Hill scored 19 points and Jeff Barbosa added eight.
English 69, Needham 66
In a game that went down to the wire, Jarnel Guzman’s 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Bulldogs to victory in the opening round of the Comcast Tournament. English takes on Brookline Monday (5:15) in the tournament’s championship game at Woburn.
Central Catholic 67, St. John’s 46
Jack Wirtanen scored 19 points. The Eagles dropped to 9-10 on the season. They host Haverhill Saturday (2) needing a win to qualify for the state tournament.
Fenwick 59, Masconomet 56
Nik Pignone’s 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds left proved the difference as the Crusaders (11-8) edged the Chieftains in the opening round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic. Pignone led all scorers with 33 points. Harrison Warshafsky scored 25 for Masconomet.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Swampscott 37, Danvers 27
Grace DiGrande scored 15 points and hauled in seven rebounds. Sophie DiGrande scored seven points and swiped seven steals.
Swampscott moves to 14-4 on the season and will play Danvers Tuesday (7) in a non-league match-up in the Gieras Tournament.
St. Mary’s 55, Saugus 39
St. Mary’s advanced to the Spartan Classic championship game behind a double-double from Pamela Gonzalez (18 points, 12 rebounds). Yirsy Queliz scored 12 points with four steals and four assists.
Fenwick 55, Revere 44
In the opening round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic
Annie Murphy (21 points), Liz Gonzalez (18) and Sammi Gallant (13) led the Crusaders, who improved to 10-8 and qualified for the Division 3 North state tournament. Erika Cheever scored 25 for the Patriots (11-8).
BOYS HOCKEY
Fenwick 2, Shrewsbury 1
The Crusaders improved to 9-9-1 and need one point to qualify for the state tournament. Fenwick has won four in a row and five of its last six games.
“We have confidence and we work hard up and down the ice,” Crusaders coach Jim Quinlan said. “We never quit.”
Derek DelVecchio scored one goal and logged one assist. Tom Estella scored one goal. Gavin Belt dished one assist. Fenwick goalie Jake Moniz made 21 saves.
“Jake Moniz played phenomenal,” Quinlan said. “He made the saves we needed him to make. Our guys played hard, our goalie played well. Shrewsbury has a good team. It was a great game.”
The Crusaders take on Peabody Monday (2) for the Carlin Cup.
Winthrop 2, Mansfield 2
On Winthrop’s senior day, Sam Yarrow and Luke Evangelista each scored one goal. Yarrow and Chalmers dished an assist each.
Evangelista gave Winthrop a 1-0 lead with his 21st goal of the season. Mansfield scored the new two goals and took a 2-1 lead. Yarrow’s breakaway goal with 40 seconds remaining made it a 2-2 tie. Vikings goalie Ryan Hovermale made 26 saves.
Winthrop (13-4-2) closes the regular season Wednesday (6) at Saugus.
Revere 10, East Boston 0
At Lt. Porrazzo Rink, the Patriots improved to 3-12-3 on the season with the shutout victory. Revere’s back in action Wednesday (5:15) when the Patriots visit Peabody.
Masconomet 11, Peabody 1
At Valley Forum in Lawrence, the Tanners fell to 1-16-1 on the season. Peabody has a quick turnaround as the Tanners take on crosstown rival Fenwick Monday (2) for the Carlin Cup.
Westwood 0, Lynnfield 0
At Canton Ice House, the Pioneers battled to a scoreless draw. Lynnfield, now 11-4-4 on the season, closes the regular season Wednesday (6) with a non-conference game at Gloucester.
GIRLS HOCKEY
St Mary’s 2, Archbishop Williams 1
Jenna Chaplain and Sam Porazinski each scored a goal for the Spartans. Jill Kirby, Mady Hentosh and Kelsey Sullivan had one assist each. Goalie Lauren Vaccaro made 17 saves.
“It was a good, hard-fought win for us,” Spartans coach Frank Pagliuca said. “Williams did a nice job of playing physical, clogging up the middle of the ice and blocking several shot attempts and scoring opportunities. I thought we were in control of the game until they got their unfortunate goal off a weird bounce. I thought that gave them some life for the remainder of the game. Fortunately, we came out with important two points in a place that we haven’t had much success in the past couple years.”
The Spartans (14-2-2) take on Needham Tuesday (12) in the Hingham Hockey Showcase.
Weymouth 3, Marblehead 2
Tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Weymouth scored in the closing minutes to seal its victory. The Magicians (4-14) hope to bounce back into the win column Tuesday (11) when they visit Wakefield.
