The Marblehead boys hockey team is now just one win away from a state tournament bid following a 3-0 shutout win over Northeastern Conference foe Danvers at Rockett Arena Wednesday night.
Zach Piersol and Jacob Garfield continued their solid seasons with one goal each, while Tommy Woodfin scored his first career varsity goal in the win. Goalie Peter Santeusanio notched 23 saves for the shutout victory.
Marblehead (9-2-1) plays on the road at Beverly Saturday.
BOYS HOCKEY
Winthrop 5, Peabody 1
The Vikings (10-3) sealed a state tournament berth with the win at Peabody. Joe Holgersen, Luke Evangelista, Sam Yarrow and Mike Brooks each found the back of the net. Holgersen also dished three assists.
Goalie Ryan Skoczylas made 22 saves.
Winthrop’s back in action Saturday afternoon (1:30) when the Vikings host Medford.
Revere 2, Somerville 2
The Patriots (2-9-2) are back on the ice Saturday evening (6) when they visit Gloucester.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Winthrop 7, Beverly 2
Emma Carleton scored four goals and dished two assists as the Vikings sealed a state tournament bid. Olivia Driscoll scored a goal with three assists. Kaiya Rodrigues and Sydney Mignosa scored one goal each. Kayla Morrill and Olivia Holmes logged one assist each.
Goalies Summer Tallent (20 saves) and Hayley McSwiney (six saves) combined for the win.
The Vikings are back in action Saturday night (8) when they visit St. Mary’s.
St. Mary’s 1, Stoneham 1
Codi Butt scored the lone goal for the Spartans with assists from Zoe Solomons and Sam Porazinski. Lauren Vaccaro played a solid game in net with 15 saves.
“We aren’t doing the little things consistently and it’s affecting our play,” Spartans coach Frank Pagliuca said. “We’re in a rut right now. Hopefully we show up with a better effort and energy Saturday against Winthrop.”
St. Mary’s (9-1-1) hosts Winthrop Saturday.
Melrose 4, Peabody 3
Sammie Mirasolo led the way with one goal and one assist in the loss, while Paige Thibodeau and Sadie Gearan had one goal each.
The Tanners (9-3-1) will look for their tournament-clinching 10th win Saturday against Oakmont.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. John’s Prep 69, Malden Catholic 65
Noah Thomas had a big game for the Eagles in the win, putting up 23 points. Liam Dunfee added 11 points, while Aidan Callahan had 10 points and Will Batchelder had nine points.
The Prep plays Tuesday at Catholic Memorial.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lynn Tech 56, Chelsea 47
Behind a 28-point outburst from Arianna Anaya, the Tigers pulled out a convincing win. Alondra Sanchez added 16 points in the win, while Michayla Lawrence scored 12 points.
Tech (6-9) takes on KIPP Tuesday.
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep 72, Catholic Memorial 3
The run of dominance for the Eagles continued Wednesday, as the Prep locked up its 87th straight Catholic Conference win and its 21st straight conference title.
Winners for St. John’s were Nick Curley (106 pounds), Adam Schaeublin (113), Alec Runnals (120), Quinn Alexander (126), Kevin Carney (133), Ryan Garlitz (138), Matt Mitchell (145), Achilles Gikas (152), Marty Roach (160), Ben Shaw (170), Drew Leahy (182), Will Moulton (285) and Owen Gaffney (295).
The Eagles are now 26-1 on the year.
BOYS TRACK
Swampscott 60, English 16
Joe Varghese was a double-winner for the Big Blue, earning wins in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and the 55-meter hurdles (8.5 seconds). Other winners for Swampscott were Anton Vasquez in the shot put (41-9 3/4), Najique Henry in the 55 dash (6.5), Henna Domian in the 300 (41.5), Owen Bergeron in the 600 (1:43.0), Dylan Brawley in the one-mile (5:11.2) and Samuel Reenstiema in the two-mile (13:12.6).
The lone win for English came in the 1000, where Adnan Jalal took first place with a time of 2:57.6.
Winthrop 45, Classical 37
Bobby Hubert won two events to help lift Winthrop to the win, taking first in the shot put (37-3) and the 50-yard dash (5.8). Other winners for the Vikings were Cam Martin in the 50 hurdles (8.5), Pat Haskell in the 600 (1:41.3) and Cormac MacPhail in the 1000 (3:02.6).
Winners for Classical were Jacob Reyes in the high jump (5-0), Oladeji Jolaoso in the 300 (42.5), Dante Miguel in the one-mile (5:56.1) and Kyle McCarthy in the two-mile (12:37.5).
GIRLS TRACK
Swampscott 63, English 13
Swampscott swept all the events in the win, getting first-place finishes from Ciara Espaillat in the shot put (33-9 1/2), Meredith Zimmer in the 55 hurdles (9.8), Paige Kennedy in the 55 dash (7.8), Anastasiya Mamida in the 300 (53.5), Leonie Flackie in the 600 (1:53.4), Ashley Marston in the 1000 (3:23.8), Amelia Groothuis in the one-mile (6:25.3) and Haley LaKind in the two-mile (14:25.0).
Classical 46, Winthrop 40
Classical got wins from Jayla Blevins in the high jump (4-8), Yarixza Ortiz in the 50 dash (6.9), Slanny Portorreal in the 300 (48.5), Olivia Waterman in the 1000 (3:50.4) and Rachel Brennan in the one-mile (5:57.5).
For Winthrop, winners were Marykate Pote in the shot put (28-2), Daniella Zanelli in the 50 hurdles (8.2), Soneida Dahlquist in the 600 (1:58.2) and Camila Miranda-Llovera in the two-mile (12:59.0).
