SAUGUS — A driver has died after crashing a car through a garage at a Hammersmith Drive home, falling off a cliff and tumbling down a 40-foot embankment on Sunday afternoon.
The driver had to be extricated from the car by Saugus Fire crews following a crash that ended with the car on its roof. There were no passengers in the car.
Police have not identified the driver, who was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
Saugus Police and Fire responded to the crash at 31 Hammersmith Drive at about 1:30 p.m.
It’s unclear if the crash was related to the snow and ice storm that battered New England on Sunday, but the cause is under investigation by Saugus Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection also responded to the scene after a report of an oil leak.
The car is expected to be removed from the crash site on Monday morning.
