SAUGUS — About 250 people laced up their hiking shoes for a First Day Hike at Breakheart Reservation Tuesday.
This year, participants included single people, couples, and families. The walks started at 10 a.m. and were led by Department of Conservation and Recreation personnel and rangers. One was about two miles, and the other, more difficult walk was more than three miles. Participants were then taken to the visitors’ center for hot chocolate or coffee, cookies, and clam chowder from Kelly’s Roast Beef.
Breakheart Reservation is a 600-acre state reservation with paved roads and natural trails throughout the forest. It is open from dawn until dusk daily and is staffed by Department of Conservation and Recreation personnel. During the hike, visitors were shown some of the signs of wildlife that are in the park.
