Registration is now open for an Emergency Medical Technician certification course at North Shore Community College’s Lynn campus.
Healthcare occupations and industries are expected to have the fastest employment growth of any employment sector, increasing up to 24 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“When you look at the 24-percent projected job growth in the health care industry, it’s easy to connect the dots and see how licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician, both locally and nationally, has the potential to open many doors in the direct care and the allied health fields,” said instructor Jack Paster, BS, M. Ed., adjunct professor of emergency medical services for NSCC. In addition to being an instructor coordinator for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services, Paster brings nearly 50 years of EMS experience to his students.
“The college is extremely supportive of this EMT program and has provided comfortable classroom space and the most up-to-date equipment currently in use on ambulances and emergency vehicles,” said Paster. “In addition, student-support services are in place to offer guidance, counseling and assistance when needed.”
The nine-credit class will run from Jan. 15 to May 6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-10 p.m. The course follows and exceeds the EMT national standard curriculum of the U.S. Department of Transportation, as adopted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is a prerequisite for taking the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician’s (NREMT) certification examination. Passage of the required practical skills and NREMT computer-based exams earn the student both a national and Massachusetts EMT certification and license.
Some of the topics to be covered include: bleeding, shock, wounds, fractures, seizures, scene safety and control, drug overdose, emergency childbirth, sudden illness, poisoning and overdoses, burns, airway management, infection control, documentation, pre-hospital splinting, CPR, bandaging, defibrillation, oxygen administration, spine immobilization and patient assessment.
Space is limited and seats are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. To register for this EMT program, visit http://www.northshore.edu/admissions/apply/credit_registration.html.
