Boys Basketball Jamboree will be played Friday at English

The inaugural IAABO Board 130 Officials vs. Cancer Boys Basketball Jamboree will be played Friday at Lynn English. Teams will play two 8-minute halves. Tickets are $5 and only MIAA passes will be accepted. Proceeds will be donated to Officials vs. Cancer, an initiative that has raised more than $2 million for the American Cancer Society since its inception in 2008.

The Elmo Benedetto Jamboree, named for the legendary late Lynn athletic director, was founded by English Coach Ron Bennett in 1986 and was played through 2015. There was no boys jamboree the last two years.

IAABO Board 130 Executive Board member Paul Halloran worked with English Athletic Director Dick Newton to get a boys jamboree back on the calendar. The games will be staffed by Board 130 officials who will be donating their time.

“The Elmo Benedetto Jamboree was an institution and something that Ron Bennett poured his heart and soul into,” Halloran said. “We are grateful to Dick Newton and Lynn English for agreeing to host, and we hope to expand the number of teams in years to come.”

“It means a lot to me personally and to our school to host the jamboree,” said Newton, who played for and later coached against Bennett (in baseball). “Coach Bennett took great pride in not only honoring a man who did so much for so many Lynn kids, but also raising money for scholarships over the years. We are thrilled to have it back.”

Friday’s schedule of games is as follows Austin Prep vs. Winthrop (5), Gloucester vs. Peabody (5:45), Masconomet vs. Swampscott (6:30), Revere vs. Classical (7:15), Beverly vs. English (8).
