A mother who was struck by a car in the downtown has been released from the hospital, but her 4-year old son, who was also hit, remains in a coma, according to a family friend.
Marly Araujo, 48, and her boy, Nathan Viera, were crossing Washington Street last Thursday when they were hit by an 80-year-old driver. Mother and son were thrown 15 feet into the air and suffered traumatic head injuries. They were rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Araujo was diagnosed with a concussion and will make a full recovery, but Nathan remains in critical condition.
“Marly was released from Mass. General a few days ago, but she doesn’t want to leave Nathan’s side, like any mother would,” said the family friend who asked to remain anonymous.
Nathan remains in critical condition and has yet to wake up, she said. His prognosis is unclear.
“The family is very private and they are asking for prayers,” the friend said.
Araujo, a self-employed house cleaner, will be unable to provide for her family as she recovers and cares for Nathan. Her husband’s ability to work will also be impacted by the accident, friends say.
As a result, friends launched a GoFundMe online fundraiser. “Please help the Araujo-Viera family in a time of great need, any contribution is greatly appreciated,” the post said.
As of Thursday morning, more than $14,000 has been raised from nearly 300 donors. Contributions ranged from $5 to as much as $500.
Contributor Dan Levy wrote, “I don’t know this family, but it seems that this woman works hard for her money. I hope my donation can help her get by.”
Carolina Merrow posted, “We are truly saddened to hear this news. We are here for your family if you ever need us. We hope for a speedy recovery. Sending all our love your way.”
The friend said she and the family are grateful for the support.
“I’m just glad there’s such a big network of people wanting to help them,” she said. “Marly needs recovery time before she returns to work and wants to stay with Nathan. They are such kind and gentle people who need help.”
Police said Araujo had just picked up her son from daycare and were crossing the street to her husband’s car when they were hit.
Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Daly said the driver stopped and waited for help. A medical helicopter was requested, but was unable to fly due to the inclement weather.
The accident investigation is still ongoing by the Peabody Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit, and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
