In state tournament action Saturday, the St. Mary’s football team advanced to the Division 7 state championship. The Spartans defeated South champion Cohasset, 22-11, at Hormel Stadium in the state semifinal. St. Mary’s was led by two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Derek O’Leary and one from running back Jalen Echevarria.
The Spartans will visit Bishop Fenwick Thursday morning (10) at Donaldson Stadium in the annual Thanksgiving clash between the two Catholic Central League rivals. The winner of Thursday’s game wins the CCL. St. Mary’s will then turn its attention to the Division 7 state championship (Super Bowl), where the Spartans will meet Central champion Blackstone Valley at Gillette Stadium (TBA).
Also in football, the Swampscott Big Blue fell to Scituate, 45-14, in the Division 5 state semifinal.
In boys soccer, St. Mary’s fell to Bromfield, 3-1, in the Division 4 state final.
