LYNN — Thirty-two artists will compete Friday in a freestyle rap tournament with the winner taking home $500.
Lynn resident Justin Morley, the administrative coordinator for IronBound Marketplace, organized the tournament. Morley has dedicated years to organizing music events, such as open mics at Opus in Salem or subway ciphers across the MBTA. The rap event on Nov. 9 will not be like any of his previous ones, he said.
“I’d like people to know that it’s not like any typical freestyle battle they’ve seen,” said Morley. “This is really about having fun and the artists being challenged on their ability to improvise their rhyme schemes according to different rounds.”
The 21-plus event, from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., will be at Lupitas Sports Bar & Grille on Washington Street in Lynn. Tickets are $15 in advance, purchased through Morley, or $20 at the door at the start of the tournament. Mr. PSA will host while DJ Slipwax controls the music.
Before the event, the first 10 people to spend at least $20 at Revolution Pie + Pint, Brew on the Grid, Land of a Thousand Hills coffee, One Mighty Mill, Tacos Lupita, or Luna Sweets will be put on the guest list, along with a plus one, said Morley. The first 10 participants who send Morley a picture of their receipt before 2 p.m. on Friday will win.
“We’re all really excited and grateful to host the event at Lupitas,” said Morley.
