The St. Mary’s golf team, behind a stellar day from Christian Emmerich, took first place in the Division 3 North tournament at Boxford’s Far Corner Golf Club Monday. The Spartans posted a team score of 332, sneaking by Weston by one stroke for the victory.
Christian Emmerich finished the day with a 5-over 77 to lead the pack, while his brother Aidan Emmerich came in with a 9-over 81. Luke Smith and Luke Sargent each shot a 15-over 87 to round out the qualifying scores for St. Mary’s.
“It’s a great win, we’re very excited about it,” said St. Mary’s coach Jay Fiste. “We’re hoping we can keep this level of play going into the state tournament next week.”
St. Mary’s will play in the Division 3 state tournament next Monday at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown.
Other teams finishing well in the Division 3 sectionals include Swampscott, who also qualified for the state tournament at Black Swan by finishing in third place with a team score of 354. Lou Spellios (11-over 83), Aidan Graciale (16-over 88), Jake Goldman (16-over 88) and Ryan Graciale (23-over 95) were the qualifying scores for the Big Blue.
Bishop Fenwick (fourth place, 358) and Lynnfield (sixth place, 368) just missed qualifying for states.
GOLF
Division 1 North Sectionals
The St. John’s Prep Eagles finished second and qualified for the state championship final, which will be held next Monday at Chicopee Country Club.
Leading scorers for the Eagles were Drew Semons (76), Robbie Forti (80), Matt Remley (80) and Alex Landry (80).
VOLLEYBALL
Austin Prep 3, Swampscott 0
Set scores were 18-25, 18-25 and 20-25. Top contributors for Swampscott were Alexa Winter (three blocks), Cassidy Ryan (16 assists), Annika Laudemann (26 digs) and Morgan Lenihan (four service aces, five kills).
St. Mary’s 3, Saugus 1
The Spartans celebrated their senior night with a non-conference victory. St. Mary’s visits CCL opponent Arlington Catholic Tuesday before Friday’s Lynn City Tournament.
GIRLS SOCCER
Malden 2, Classical 1
The Rams dropped to 7-6-1. Fatima Girdia scored Classical’s lone goal of the game on Izzy McGaughey’s assist. Classical (7-6-1) visits Winthrop Wednesday. The Rams are three points shy of clinching a state tournament bid.
Marblehead 3, Somerville 0
After a scoreless first half, the Magicians picked up their rhythm and scored three unanswered goals to finish the shutout victory. Grace Arthur scored two goals and Carter Murray added one.
The Magicians (5-9) visit Swampscott Wednesday afternoon (4).
BOYS SOCCER
St. Mary’s 6, Malden Catholic 0
Olu George led St. Mary’s with three goals. Thiago DeOliveira scored two goals and Connor Mackey added one. Nick Pappas recorded three saves for his sixth shutout of the season.
“Olu’s got a great hot streak going right now,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said. “He’s finding the back of the net. It’s good to see Thiago get his groove and other playmakers like Nolan Perez and Joey Thongsythavong distribute the ball to them.”
St. Mary’s (13-1-2) visits Catholic Memorial Thursday (7).
Peabody 1, Danvers 0
Johnny Alves scored the lone goal on Pablo Hernandez’s assist. Tanners goalie Will Machado made five saves for the shutout win. Defensively, Peabody was led by Ben Kemp, Will Manning and Michael Tansey. Midfielders Dylan Guarino, Kyle Joyce and Kyle Morfis also played well.
“It was a big win,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “We started slow, no question. Four starters got hurt in the first half. We benched the four of them but the kids that came off the bench played very well. It was a good team effort.”
Peabody (10-3-2) hosts Somerville Wednesday (6).
Everett 1, Classical 1
Classical’s Fernando Gomez scored the game-tying goal in the second half. The Rams host Malden Wednesday night (7). With a win or tie, Classical will clinch the NEC title.
Saugus 3, Amesbury 1
The Sachems picked up their second consecutive victory to improve to 8-6.
FIELD HOCKEY
Swampscott 2, Marblehead 0
Natalie Domeniconi scored both goals with assists from Sydney Cresta. The Big Blue visit Gloucester Tuesday (7).
Josie Friedman and Mae Colwell played well for the Magicians. Marblehead hosts Peabody Tuesday (4).

The Marblehead boys cross country team won the Varsity A-II (large schools) race at the Brown University Northeast Cross Country Invitational Saturday. Top finishers for the Magicians were
