The St. Mary’s boys soccer team remained undefeated in Catholic Central League play with a 4-2 victory over Archbishop Williams Monday at Manning Field.
Olu George got the Spartans moving in the right direction with a goal two minutes in. George, Thiago DeOliveira, Kevin Perez and Nolan Perez each scored one goal. DeOliveira dished two assists, while George and Joey Thongsythavong each tallied one assist.
“We got lot of different kids on the field,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said. “I’m definitely happy with the win. We have a few kids that are a little banged up. It was what we needed, to do that after playing a tough St. John’s Prep team. We’re all on the same page.
“We’re focused on seeding,” D’Agostino said. “We’ll take the win. It wasn’t a pretty win but I was happy with the win. They have a solid record so that’s big for us. I’m just looking to keep everyone healthy and get some kids minutes off the bench.”
The Spartans (11-1-2, 8-0-1 CCL) host Spellman Wednesday (6).
BOYS SOCCER
Classical 4, Salem 0
Jenner Robles led the Rams with two goals, while Matthew Julio (first varsity goal) and Gabriel Novoa each scored once.
“Jenner played his best game of the season,” Rams coach Eric Moreno said. “He didn’t stop working hard. His second goal was amazing. It took a lot of composure to score that goal.”
Robles, Novoa, Chris Zelaya and Alex Amaya each dished one assist. Rams goalie Daniel Cortes made four saves.
Classical (11-1-3) takes over first place in the Northeastern Conference.
Fenwick 4, Austin Prep 4
Sean Kern scored two goals, Tarek Nabbout and Brendan Crichton each scored one. Fenwick (7-5-2) visits Williams Thursday (4).
Saugus 4, Malden Catholic 2
Ryan Pugh scored two goals for the Sachems. Jonathan Rodrigues and Juan Oliveira each scored one. The Sachems visit Tech Boston Wednesday (3:45).
GIRLS SOCCER
Swampscott 6, Somerville 0
Mackenzie Kearney led the Big Blue with two goals and one assist. Haley Bernhardt continued her stellar season with one goal and one assist. Sophie DiGrande, Allison Tribendis and Madeline Tribendis each scored once. Maddie Hudson logged one assist. The Big Blue (8-4-1) visit Medford Saturday (2:30).
Williams 2, St. Mary’s 1
Kayla Demers scored St. Mary’s lone goal on an assist from Susannah Cornell. The Spartans visit (9-5-1) Spellman Wednesday (3:30).
GOLF
Salem 40 1/2, Classical 30 1/2
At Olde Salem Greens, the Witches earned a close win behind solid performances from their top five golfers. Ethan Doyle won his match 8-1, while Tommy Harrington won his match 6 1/2-2 1/2, Nick Angeramo and Casey Williamson each won their matches 6-3 and Joe Parr won his match 5-4. Salem (15-3) hosts English Wednesday.
Luke Rao, Kyle McCarthy and Andrew Patrie played well in Classical’s fourth defeat of the season. The Rams (11-4) visit Peabody Tuesday (4).
Marblehead 37, Beverly 35
Despite Marblehead’s top three golfers losing their respective matches, the Magicians rallied to take down Beverly at Beverly Golf and Tennis.
The wins by Will Cleary (7-2), Ben Gansenberg (6 1/2-2 1/2) and Finn Keaney (5-4) were enough to get the points necessary for the win. Cleary and Brendan Locke both earned medalist honors with scores of 38, while Gavin Lundgren shot a 40 and tied his match 4 1/2-4 1/2.
Marblehead (8-3-1) hosts Somerville Tuesday at Tedesco.
Swampscott 37, Gloucester 35
The Big Blue pulled out a close win at Tedesco.
Winners for Swampscott were Aidan Graciale (6 1/2-2 1/2), Tate Greenfield (5 1/2-3 1/2), Max Pegnato (5-4), Jake Goldman (5-4) and Aidan Tierney (5-4). Danny Dilisio tied his match 4 1/2-4 1/2.
Swampscott (10-4-1) visits Saugus Tuesday at Cedar Glen Golf Course.
VOLLEYBALL
Salem 3, English 2
In another intense five set-match between the Witches and Bulldogs, Salem snuck by with the win. Set scores were 25-22, 23-25, 27-29, 25-17, 15-10.
“It was a really great set of games on both sides of the net,” English coach Mike Haddad said. “I’m very proud of the way the Bulldogs played tonight.”
Andy Nhiv logged four aces, Merily Folestal tallied three kills and two aces and Genesi Duarte added three kills.
The Bulldogs (2-10) visit Revere Tuesday (5:30).
