REVERE — The Rumney Marsh Burial Ground Renovation Committee will give a guided tour of what they call “Revere’s crown jewel” Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
The Rumney Marsh Burial Ground is where some of the city’s first citizens are buried, including many heroes of the Revolutionary War and Civil War. More than 44 veterans were laid to rest in these hallowed grounds.
Samuel Sprague, who led three companies of minutemen during the Revolutionary War, is buried there, along with the famous fighting parson Philip Payson, Joseph Green, Samuel Pratt, Caleb Pratt, and James and Andrew Tewksbury. Deane Winthrop, son of the first governor of Massachusetts, and Lt. Thomas Pratt, who built the Slade’s Spice Mill on the creek, were also buried there.
The committee is inviting Revere residents, neighbors, students, and visitors to join members as they present the story of the Rumney Marsh Burial Ground and provide a guided tour throughout the cemetery. Important features will be highlighted and details of the types of burial markers and headstones and the artwork on many of them will be displayed.
Following the tour, attendees can visit the Revere Society for Cultural and Historical Preservation at 108 Beach St. for light snacks and refreshments.
