SAUGUS — An event later this month will honor the president of the Saugus Boosters Club, a Vietnam War veteran, a longtime politician, and Saugus High School’s senior class president.
Each year, members of the town are chosen to be honored for their leadership in the community as part of the Saugus Public Library Foundation Gala. Residents Harry Mazman, Gordon Shepard, Peter Rossetti, and Seven Greer will be honored at the Oct. 20 event hosted at the library.
Greer, a Saugus High School senior who has been president of his class for three years, was the youngest to be nominated for the award. He is a member of the drama club, Saugus Gay-Straight Alliance, and the debate club.
Mazman became the president of the Saugus Boosters Club in 1980 and is still at it. He works year-round to support students participating in Saugus High athletics by providing financial scholarships to 15 students each year. He also raises money to purchase trophies, banners, and put on banquets.
Many residents know Mazman for the time he spends selling football calendars on Founder’s Day.
Shepard, a lifelong resident of Saugus and U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, has been the driving force for keeping up the veterans section of Riverside Cemetery for decades.
In addition to volunteering his time to clean up the area, he has raised the money needed to install three flagpoles. He led a crusade to identify every grave, which took countless hours of research and calls to Washington, D.C.
Shepard is responsible for the granite curbing around the veterans plot.
Rossetti is also a lifelong resident of Saugus. He grew up in a family that gave back to the town of Saugus and has continued the tradition, according to a statement from the Saugus Public Library Foundation. He has held many political offices during his life, and continues to be on the School Committee for Northeast Metropolitan Vocational Regional High School, the Saugus Planning Board, the Council on Aging, and Town Meeting.
The event will be the fourth annual gala at the Saugus Public Library and will include flower arrangements created by members of the Saugus Garden Club, a silent auction, beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres.
All who attend the gala must be 21 or older. Tickets cost $30 in advance or $35 at the door and are available at www.sauguspubliclibrary.org or at the library.
