The St. Mary’s golf team was able to squeeze out a Catholic Central League win in the rain despite being without top player Christian Emmerich Monday, beating Bishop Fenwick 179-172 at The Meadow at Peabody.
“It was good to get a win against a conference opponent for sure, especially Fenwick,” said St. Mary’s coach Jay Fiste. “They’re much improved and they’ve got a good team this year, so getting a win against them was great.”
Aidan Emmerich shot even-par and recorded 36 points to lead the way for St. Mary’s, but the big story of the day was the play of Nick Cicolini, who put up a career-high 32 points to help lead the Spartans to the win.
Also aiding in the win for the Spartans were Luke Smith (24 points), Owen Maguire (23 points), Sean Mathers (23 points), Pete Pagliuca (21 points) and Luke Sargent (20 points).
“Whenever you can have seven guys score at least 20 points in a match, you’re going to be in great shape,” said Fiste.
Next up for the Spartans is another CCL matchup on the road, this one against Austin Prep at Mount Hood Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s always tough to play there, it’s kind of a quirky course and they obviously play well there with it being their home course,” said Fiste. “But we’ll have our full lineup back out there, so if we can keep the ball in play we should have a good chance.”

“We moved the ball around well,” Spartans coach Mike D’Agostino said. “We’re still working on capitalizing still and building our solid defense in the back. I like the way we’re vibing together. I’m excited for the way we’re playing.”
St. Mary’s hosts Arlington Catholic Wednesday (3:45).
Saugus 3, CASH Boston 2
The Sachems improved to 5-2 this season with a road win at White Stadium. Jonathan Rodrigues scores two goals and Juan Oliveira scored once.
“We had great vision coming up from midfield switching fields and finding our forwards in the final third,” Saugus coach Larry Bolduc said. “We had so many chances to score but we couldn’t find the back of the net. Jonathan had two great finishes to get us that surge offensively and Juan Oliveira followed up with a great rebounding goal. We had lapses on defense but they had a dynamic skilled player who scored their two.”
