LYNN — Wheelabrator Saugus’ $5,000 donation to the Downtown Lynn Cultural District (DLCD) will provide more opportunities for the city.
On Wednesday, representatives from the waste management service, John Farese and Maryanne Lewis, handed a check to Carolyn Cole, director of DLCD, at the Lynn mayor’s office. Wheelabrator, built in 1975 as the country’s first waste energy plant, donates money back to their customers as a way to show their appreciation, according to Farese.
“I have a great job giving money away …” he said. “The donations are a way for us to say thank you to our longtime customers.”
Farese said he asked Mayor Thomas M. McGee where Lynn could use a little extra money. McGee said there is a lot of great work being done in the downtown area and the donation is an opportunity to continue that.
Cole said she hopes to keep activating spaces and creating more public art in the city’s busiest area. Given she is a “one woman show,” donations such as this really go a long way. The city is filled with incredible talent, resources, and future goals and monetary help from surrounding communities helps to embrace them, she said.
“There are so many good avenues where money of this nature can be useful,” she said.
