Shots fired in Swampscott send Clarke Elementary School into lockdown

SWAMPSCOTT — Shots were fired on Norfolk Avenue Thursday afternoon, forcing nearby Clarke Elementary School to go into lockdown.

Swampscott Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 97 Norfolk Ave. at approximately 1 p.m.

There was no damage to cars or houses in the area and no one was hit. The intended target of the shooting, a 38-year-old man well-known to police, refused to cooperate with the investigation, Swampscott Police Sgt. Tim Cassidy said.

Nearby residents reported hearing up to three shots fired. Clarke School was put into lockdown for about half an hour until the area was deemed safe, Cassidy said.

No arrests have been made.
