The Peabody boys soccer team opened its season with a victory Wednesday afternoon thanks to a pair of goals from Johnny Alves in a 2-0 Tanners win.
Peabody goalie Will Machado made nine saves for the shutout in net.
Also playing well for the Tanners were Ben Kemp, Will Manning, Juan Hernandez and Ramon Falcao.
“We really controlled the game in the first half,” Tanners coach Stan McKeen said. “In the second half, Swampscott played well. They had opportunities. It’s always good to get the first win. I’m pleased.”
Peabody (1-0) visits Revere Friday.
Classical 4, Gloucester 2
Fernando Gomez led the Rams to victory with two goals. Gabriel Novoa and Ever De León each scored once. Novoa dishes two assists and Jenner Robles had one. The Rams (3-0-1) host Saugus Thursday night (7:15) at Manning.
GIRLS SOCCER
Fenwick 2, St. Mary’s 1
At Fenwick, Kayla Demers scored in the second half on an assist from Susannah Cornell. Eliza Brown had a stellar game in net with 15 saves. Emily Egan and Morgan Mackey led St. Mary’s defense.
“We fell behind 2-0 and didn’t have a great first half,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “We had a great second half. We came right at them. It was a great rivalry game.”
The Spartans host Arlington Catholic Monday (4).
Saugus 7, English 1
Melissa Zayas scored English’s lone goal. English (1-3) visits East Boston Monday (3:45).
Peabody 4, Medford 0
The Tanners had four different goal scorers, with senior Erin Kidd and sophomores Bridget O’Connell, Aja Alimonte and Hailey Baker all finding the back of the net. Freshmen Ava D’Ambrosio and Samantha Simmons each had one assist, while goalkeeper Shelby Doucette had two saves.
Peabody (3-0) plays Swampscott on the road Friday.
Concord-Carlisle 2, Marblehead 1
Freshman Annika Haley scored her first varsity goal for the Magicians in the loss. Goalkeeper Rachel Sauliner had 14 saves.
Marblehead (0-1) hosts Danvers Friday.
VOLLEYBALL
Marblehead 3, Medford 0
Marblehead earned a win in straight sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.
Jordan Heafitz led the way for the Magicians with six kills and four blocks, while Anna Arbo led the team with seven service points. Izzy Curtin contributed 17 assists in the win.
Marblehead (3-0) takes on Masconomet Thursday.
Beverly 3, Somerville 0
Beverly breezed to a three-set win, 25-13, 25-20, 25-14.
Aleca Malgara had 4 service aces and Ella Speidel had six kills.
Salem 3, English 2
The Bulldogs fell by scores of 25-13, 18-25, 25-20, 20-25 and 10-15. Libero Andy Nhiv logged 32 kills for the Bulldogs. Merily Folestal tallied three kills and Jessica Ruiz had six aces. English (0-2) visits Danvers Friday (5:30).
“This is my third season coaching here and to go five sets in both of our matches, this is one of our strongest starts,” English coach Mike Haddad said.
Danvers 3, Classical 1
Classical stole a set Wednesday, but the Rams eventually fell by set scores of 15-25, 15-25, 25-21, 9-25.
Shanelle Belmer-Barry had a big game for Classical, registering seven service points, eight kills and two blocks. Skyler Crayton added five kills on the offensive end. Defensively, Pamela Diaz led the team with 10 digs, while Amber Crayton had nine digs and Keysha Chavannes had six digs.
Classical (0-2) plays on the road at Somerville Friday.
Peabody 3, Swampscott 0
Danielle Diantgikis led the Tanners with 15 service points, while Rachel Coleman had 13 assists and Ava LaValle had seven kills. Tatiana Correia and Martyna Kot each contributed three aces in the win.
Peabody plays on the road at Saugus Friday.
For Swampscott, Cassidy Ryan led the way with 16 assists while Alexa Papazoglou had five kills.
The Big Blue host Everett Friday.
