LYNN — A 24-year-old Lynn man was arrested on a warrant Tuesday night while trying to board a plane to the Dominican Republic, and charged with stabbing a man inside a Union Street restaurant in July.
Victor Mercedes, of 176 Hamilton Ave., was charged with attempted murder and armed robbery.
Police responded to a restaurant at 15 Union St. on July 20 at 12:20 a.m. on a report of a stabbing. Mercedes allegedly stabbed the victim, a 35-year-old Lynn man, in the abdomen during a dispute, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
The victim was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries and required surgery, but later recovered, Kmiec said.
Kmiec said the victim was only able to identify Mercedes by his first name. Through a follow-up investigation, police identified the suspect as Mercedes and obtained a warrant for his arrest days after the stabbing.
Mercedes has been on the run since then. He was arrested while trying to board a plane at Logan Airport. State Police called Lynn Police to relay that they had the fugitive in custody, Kmiec said.
