SAUGUS — Planned Parenthood and the Saugus Democratic Committee have each pledged support of Matthew Crescenzo, a candidate for state representative in the 9th Essex District.
Crescenzo, 25, is a Democratic candidate running for the seat currently occupied by Rep. Donald Wong (R-Saugus). The Saugus resident is a U.S. Army veteran who served overseas in Afghanistan and South Korea as a communications specialist and security officer.
The endorsement from Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund comes at a key moment for reproductive rights and access to health care because the Republican party continues to support efforts that will destroy the current healthcare system, said Crescenzo in a statement.
“Reproductive rights are under fire and it is vital that all members of the State House stand up in support of providing greater access to quality and affordable health care,” he said.
The fund is a nonprofit advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts that works to protect and increase access to reproductive health care.
The Saugus Democratic Town Committee unanimously voted to endorse Crescenzo at its last meeting.
“Being a fourth-generation Saugus resident, it is humbling to receive the support of those committed to serving my hometown,” he said. “I will work to support all our residents, bring in new jobs, and support our environment.”
