LYNN — North Shore’s premier modern dance company, Forty Steps Dance, closes their 25th anniversary season with a free community performance at Flax Pond Park in Lynn on Saturday, July 28, at 5 p.m.
The mission of Forty Steps Dance is to engage and inspire communities through the expressive art of modern dance. Saturday’s performance will include free form dance through the park using its many natural landscape features. There will be site-specific choreography as well as excerpts from their repertory and a preview of new works to come. There is also an interactive segment planned where dancers will invite the audience to join in.
Founded by artistic director and Nahant resident Sallee Slagle in 1992, the troupe has performed throughout the Boston area and abroad with the Culture Connection, Dance North Alliance, North Shore Dance Alliance, Windhover Center for the Performing Arts, Majestic Cruise Lines and the Saint Hill European Arts Festival in England.
In residence at Dance Dimensions in Nahant, Forty Steps Dance participates in community festivals as well as more formal stage events. Forty Steps Dance believes in the importance of bringing the art of dance out of the studio and into the community. They offer free community performances each summer. Past performance locations include Swampscott, Lynn, Rockport and Nahant.
The performance at Flax Pond Park is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic to enjoy this outdoor performance. The rain date is Sunday, July 29 at 5 pm. Updates on weather will be posted to the company’s website and Facebook page.
This performance is supported in part by a grant from the Lynn Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and in part by the Nahant Preservation Trust.
Other upcoming Forty Steps Dance events include a fundraiser at Tides Restaurant, Nahant, which will be held on September 13. Additional details on this event and other performances are available on the Forty Steps Dance website.
