There’s no denying the undefeated Lynnfield boys tennis team. The No. 1 Pioneers (17-0) will play for their first North sectional title since 1986, thanks to a dominant 5-0 win over l No. 4 Hamilton Wenham Monday at the Lynnfield Middle School.
The Pioneers will play No. 6 Weston in the championship match this afternoon at 3:30 at Newton South High School.
It was only fitting that senior captain Arlex Correa clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at second singles.
“It’s almost surreal that after all this time over the past four years, we are finally there,” he said. “It’s been an incredible year and we have worked so hard for this going back to freshman year when Colin (Lamusta) and I used to hit with each other before school. I know we are going to play our best.”
Lorenzo Russo and Michael Gentile got the Pioneers on the board early with a 6-0, 6-1 win at first doubles. Max Rothermund took the first singles match, 6-1, 6-4, to double the Pioneer lead to 2-0 and set the stage for Correa.
Jamil Khodr and David Gentile took the second doubles match 6-2, 6-0, then senior captain Lamusta wrapped up the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win in the third singles match.
