With a 6-5 overtime win over Newburyport on Saturday at Manning Field, the St. Mary’s boys lacrosse team qualified for the state tournament. The Spartans, in a nail-biter, had to work hard from start to finish to grab the win. Brendan Laundry (three goals) scored with 15 seconds left in regulation and Davis Kinne scored the game-winner in OT.
“Newburyport’s a really good team,” Spartans coach Josh Field said. “They’re a big, physical team. They have a lot of great athletes, they’re well-coached. It was a good test for us.”
Nick Napolitano scored two goals, Christian Lebert added one. Kaden Quirk made 18 saves.
“It’s one of our goals every year,” Field said. “I’m happy we did it without having to wait until our last game. I’m proud of these guys. We have our expectations set pretty high.”
St. Mary’s (9-8) wraps the regular season Wednesday at Arlington Catholic.

“It’s frustrating to pitch when you think you should be out of an inning and you are not,” said Tanners coach Mark Bettencourt. “We make mistakes and things snowball. We have to play better defense.”
GIRLS TENNIS
Austin Prep 3, Lynnfield 2
At the Boston Sports Club Monday, the Pioneers fell to 13-4 with a loss to the perennial Catholic Central League champion Cougars. Lynnfield winners were Emma Gallucci at third singles (6-0, 6-4) and Celeste Joly and Clare Yange at second doubles (6-3, 6-2).
First singles Megan Nevils took the first set 6-3 and had match point at 6-5 in the second, but Marie-Elena Gerety rallied to take the second set 7-6 and then took the match in a super tie-breaker, 10-8.
“We had some chances but could not convert,” said Lynnfield coach Craig Stone. “Austin Prep played extremely well and deserved the win.”
