With a 12-4 win over Everett, the Classical baseball team clinched a berth in the state tournament Wednesday afternoon.
“After starting out 2-5 on the season I’m very proud of the hard work and determination this team put forward,” Rams coach Mike Zukowski said. “We didn’t give up and we battled all season.”
Aidan Dow earned the win on the mound, tossing five innings and fanning four. Dow went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
AJ Luciano went 2-for-3, Sean Devin went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Cesar Carrero went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Brett Bucklin went 1-for-4 with two RBI, Dayshon Anderson went 1-for-4 with one RBI, Dan Lilja went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Aaron O’Connor had two RBI.
English 2, Medford 1 (F/9)
Devin Curley threw all nine innings and retired the last 13 batters in a row. Billy Allen delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the fifth inning. Dax Billingsley hit a pinch-hit single to start the ninth and scored the game-winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt by Julio Figueroa.
English (7-10) needs wins in its final three games to make the state tournament.
Saugus 7, Winthrop 1
The Sachems punched their ticket to the state tournament.
“We’re obviously happy because it’s something we’ve been working towards, but we’re not doing too much celebrating,” said Saugus coach Joe Luis. “We know we still have work to do. We still have two games left so we don’t want to take our foot off the gas.”
Todd Tringale got the win on the mound for the Sachems, giving up just three hits and striking out 12. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles. Grant Rust and CJ Graffeo each went 2-for-4.
Saugus (10-8) hosts Wakefield today (4).
Beverly 16, Marblehead 1
The Panthers clinched the NEC North with the victory.
SOFTBALL
Peabody 9, Swampscott 0
Tianna Dawe struck out 13 Swampscott batters and only walked one, giving up just two hits. Dawe also went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and three RBI. Sydney Lowry also went 3-for-3, contributing two RBI. The Tanners (15-2) will take on Beverly in the Corning Tournament Saturday morning (11).
Swampscott (4-11) visits English this afternoon (4).
Saugus 10, Winthrop 3
The Sachems clinched a berth in the state tournament.
“We’re ecstatic, and I’m just very happy for the kids,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist. “We worked hard to get here, so it’s nice to know that we’ll be playing ball for a little longer now.”
Caitlyn Wood did it all on the field, pitching a complete game in the circle (three runs, three hits, eight strikeouts) and going 3-for-4 at the plate (two home runs, six RBI). Taylor Bogdanski went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Sadie DiCenso went 2-for-3 with a double.
Saugus (10-9) will host Stoneham this afternoon for the Sachems’ Senior Day.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Marblehead 18, Peabody 6
The Magicians locked up the Northeastern Conference North Division title with a 18-6 win over Peabody Wednesday afternoon, improving to 9-0 in NEC play. The game was never truly in doubt, as the Magicians took a 12-3 lead into halftime.
Grace Arthur led the offense with three goals and five assists, while Caroline Driscoll added three goals and one assist. Annie Ronan, Niamh Healy and Maddie Erskine each added two goals, while Callie O’Neill and Grace Honos each had one goal and one assist. Lydia Bongiorno and Carolyn Arthur each had one goal, while goalie Maeve Caldwell had seven saves in the win. Marblehead (12-4) hosts Hamilton-Wenham Tuesday.
For Peabody, Olivia Kiricoples led the way with three goals. Maddy Lomasney added two goals, Sarah Buckley had one goal and Hailee Lomasney had two assists. The Tanners are now 14-4, with all four losses coming in NEC play (5-4 NEC).
Lynnfield 17, Mystic Valley 7
The Pioneers (10-7) celebrated Senior Night with a win. Fittingly, their three seniors led the way. Hannah Filipe scored the first varsity goal of her career in the second half. Liv Smyrnios led the scoring with seven goals and Gracie Sperling had a solid all-around game with two goals, four ground balls and five draw controls. Tori Morelli dominated the draw circle with 10 wins. Ashley Barrett (3 goals), Liz Sykes, and Jen Flynn also scored. Brianna Barrett picked up four ground balls.
BOYS TENNIS
Classical 5, Everett 0
Moses Ba led things off with a win in first singles (6-0, 6-0), while Stephen Ong (6-0, 6-2) and Alvin Lam (7-6, 6-2) earned wins in second and third singles, respectively.
In doubles play, the team of Andy Ma and Jake Ennis won the first match (6-2, 6-0) and the team of Jonathan Chase and Tyrese Joseph won the second match (6-0, 6-0).
Classical (6-7) will look to get back to .500 when it hosts Swampscott Wednesday.
Swampscott 3, Peabody 2
Justin Ratner was the lone singles winner for the Big Blue, taking the third match (6-0, 6-3.) In doubles play, the team of Steve Santanello and Dan Johnson won the first match (6-1, 7-5) and the team of Robbie Jensen and Ben Ringler won the second match (6-1, 6-0).
For Peabody, seventh grader Paul Neal got the win in first singles (6-1, 6-1), while Alex Nadeau won second singles (6-0, 6-1).
Marblehead 4, Beverly 1
Marblehead got singles wins from David Grenader (6-0, 6-3) and Dan Livtak (7-5, 6-3) and doubles wins from the team of Adam Sherf and Tony Gluskin (6-1, 6-2) and the team of Mason Friedman and Jack Quigley (6-4, 6-3).

On senior day, the Rams earned a state tournament bid. Seniors Kathy Nguyen and Cindy Roberts both won (6-0, 6-1).
Marblehead 4, Beverly 1
The Magicians swept the singles portion of the match and added a doubles win for good measure in the victory. Singles wins came from Michelle Shub (6-0, 6-0), Hannah Porath (6-1, 6-3) and Lisa Krebs (6-0, 6-0), while the doubles win came from the team of Mandy DuMais and Simone Likterov (6-1, 6-2).
BOYS TRACK
Lynn Tech – 6th place at CAC Championship
Tech’s Jamie James was named MVP after an impressive performance in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Championships Monday. James finished first in the 100-meter (11.1 seconds) and the 200 (23.3), while also placing third in the discus (109 feet, 9 inches). Other finishers in the top 10 at the meet for Tech were Keoni Gaskin in the shot put (3rd place, 40-7), Amari Gaston in the 200 (7th place, 24.56) and Yese Itungano in the 400 (8th place, 56.48). The Tigers also got strong performances in the relays, with the team of Gaskin, Gaston, Haidar Bdaiwi and Ratha Thach placing fifth in the 4×100 (48.21) and the team of Bdaiwi, Thach, Gonzalas and Itungano placing sixth in the 4×400 (3:56.28).
GIRLS TRACK
Lynn Tech – 6th place at CAC Championship
Michayla Lawrence put up state qualifying times in both the 100 and the 200 Monday, finishing second in the 100 (11.67) and third in the 200 (26.76). Other top finishers for the Tigers were Nayelis Diaz in the 400 (5th place, 1:09.48), the 4×100 relay team of Andrea Estrella, Merillis Dalado, Cheyanne Lenbaptiste and Kengeraliz De Valle (8th place, 57.94) and the 4×400 relay team of Diaz, Estrella, Dalado and Victoria Hong (6th place, 4:56.39).
