Max Pegnato got the win on the mound after pitching six innings and allowing just two runs with two strikeouts as the Swampscott baseball team kept its state tournament hopes alive with an 8-3 win over Marblehead.
Drew Olivieri (1-for-3) and Dylan January (1-for-4, HR) each had two RBI to lead the way, while Maxx Cooper (2-for-3) had one RBI. Spencer Perkins went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs scored, Brett Benoit went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Ryan Garciale went 1-for-3.
Swampscott (9-7), needing two more wins for a state tournament berth, is at Peabody Wednesday.
Reading 4, Classical 3
Chris Baio got his first varsity start on the mound and threw 3 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts.
Dan Lilja, also making his first varsity appearance on the mound, pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief.
“Those guys gave us a chance,” Classical coach Mike Zukowski said. “They did what they were supposed to do. They pitched well.”
Sean Devin had two hits with 2 RBI, Brett Bucklin had two hits with one run scored and Cesar Carrero went 1-for-1 with one RBI.
Classical (9-8) visits Everett Wednesday.
St. John’s Prep 14, Gloucester 4
The Eagles launched five home runs in the double-digit win Monday evening. Mike Yarin hit two bombs to lead the way, while Jacob Bolger, Rodney Nyborg and Max Freedman each hit one. Pitcher James Lamarca got the win on the mound.
St. John’s Prep (12-4) plays on the road at St. Mary’s tonight (7).
Beverly 6, Salem 2
Nick Berry had three hits and three RBI for the Panthers. Spencer Brown (3 hits) and Clayton McAlpine (2) each added an RBI in the win. Mike Brauninger pitched four innings for the win.
Beverly (14-3) plays hosts Marblehead Wednesday.
Austin Prep 7, Peabody 3
Eric DeMayo had two hits and one RBI, Jake Irvine had two hits and scored one run and Jake Gustin had one hit and one RBI.

Sarah Vallette’s bunt scored Marlee Hamor with the winning run. Hamor went 2 for-3 at the plate with an RBI triple.

The Fenwick seniors had a big day on Senior Day. Natalie Medros allowed one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts for the win, and Courtney Norton 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Sarah Chambers went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Katie Olsen went 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Fenwick (6-9) takes on Danvers Saturday.

Tianna Dawe got the win. Peabody (14-2) is at Swampscott Wednesday.

Jessica Martin went 2-for-4 with a home run and six RBI for the Vikings (4-11), who host Malden this afternoon.
Tech 17, Minuteman 16
The Tigers were down to their final out with runners on first and third Monday, and Sierra Osorio came through with the game-winning RBI single to give Tech the win. Shyla Jackson added a home run in the win.
Valerie Garcia got the win on the mound, while Theresa Mastropietro pitched in relief.
Tech (1-15) hosts Chelsea this afternoon.

The Magicians got wins from Dan Litvak at third doubles (6-1, 6-0) over Drew Curtin. And the second-doubles team of Mason Friedman and Jack Quigley won their match, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
In first and second singles, Tripoom Jolo got the best of Billy Ackerman (6-3, 6-1) and David Grenader fell to Roy Platteel, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-2.

Max Rothermund took the first singles match, 6-3, 6-1, while Arlex Correa prevailed at second singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Colin Lamusta completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win at third singles. In doubles, Lorenzo Russo and Mike Gentile won at first doubles, 6-2, 6-4 and Gentile and Jamil Khodr won at second doubles, 6-2, 6-0.

Swampscott 5, Revere 0
First singles wins came from Anna Cilley (6-0, 6-0), Lily Sanphy (6-3, 6-1) and Gina Hollenbach (6-3, 6-2). The first doubles team of Rachel Weiss and Georgia Cilley won (7-5, 7-5) and the second doubles pair of Madeline and Allison Tribendis won (6-1, 6-0).
“I was thrilled with our season,” said Swampscott coach Nina Rogers, whose team finished up at 14-2 and now awaits tournament pairings. “We had a lot of new players (and) our seniors had a great season.
“The second doubles team of Madeline and Allison Tribendis went 11-0 this season and they never played tennis before,” she said.
Lynnfield 4, Pentucket 1
On Senior Day, the Pioneers started three seniors. Megan Nevils won at first singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Alexa Vittiglio took the second singles match in a super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6, 10-4. Senior Bela Ferreira completed the singles sweep with a win at third singles, 6-0, 6-4. In doubles, Gillian Skelley and Emma Graumann won at first doubles, 6-1, 7-5 while senior captains Makayla Maffeo and Christina Albano, in their doubles debut as partners, lost a closely contested match at second doubles match in a super tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 7-10.

Brian Harrington led the Crusaders with four goals and two assists. Diego Alvarez-Segee scored two goals. Derek Delvecchio, Nick Muzi and Stefano Fabiano each scored one. Max Grenert scored his first varsity goal.
Fenwick (11-5) visits Williams Monday.
Newburyport 7, Swampscott 2
After trailing just 3-2 entering the fourth quarter, a four-goal run by Newburyport in the final period simply couldn’t be answered by the Big Blue. Vincent Palmer and Darian Wulf scored one goal each for Swampscott, while Colin Walsh and Kyle Fitzgerald each had one assist. Goalie Tim Perlin had 21 saves in the loss.
Swampscott (3-14) closes out the regular season against Gloucester this afternoon.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Lynnfield 17, Wakefield 7
The Pioneers (9-7) qualified for the tournament for a third straight season. Liv Smyrnios and Olivia Sarni scored five goals each, while Jen Flynn had four goals and Gracie Sperling had three. Smyrnios also had a team-high seven draw controls. Sophia Ellis played well defensively with six ground balls and also won five draws, while Hannah Filipe also had a strong defensive game with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Bulldogs (5-2) had four double-winners: Donald Fombin, high jump (5-6) and 110 hurdles (19.7); EmilRossi, shot put (39-1 1/4) and Javelin (89-0); Samuel Adewale, discus (126-6) and 200 (24.5); and Abrar Jalal, 800 (2:12.1) and 2-mile (11:09);
Also winning for English were Prince Brown, long jump (18.9 1/2) and Juan Avelino, 100 (11.2);. English also won the 4×100 relay (47.8).
