In a battle between Northeastern Conference powerhouses, the Marblehead softball team edged out Classical, 2-1, Monday afternoon.
Classical’s Brooke Warren made her first varsity start in the circle and tossed seven innings, allowing five hits and fanning 10.
Madison Dana scored Classical’s lone run on a RBI single from Kiara Edmonds.
“It was a back and forth game,” Classical coach Erica Richard said. “It came down to getting the big hit. They got one more than us. It was a good game, back and forth the whole time.”
Classical (8-5) plays English Wednesday.
Charlotte Plakans and Bell Sogoloff each hit a RBI double for Marblehead. Racheal Saulnier and Mercedez Pelletier each scored one run.
In the circle, Plakans allowed four hits and fanned eight.
Marblehead (13-1) hosts Malden Wednesday.
St. Mary’s 13, Matignon 1
Alyssa Grossi’s three-run home run and Talia Smaller’s two-run home run led the Spartans offense. Lily Newhall allowed one earned run over four innings of work and Angelia Pepe pitched three scoreless innings.
St. Mary’s (8-5) hosts Williams Wednesday (3:45).
Peabody 8, Beverly 1
Tianna Dawe fanned 12 and allowed no earned runs over seven innings. Dawe went 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, Luciana Mastromatteo went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Peabody’s (13-0) at Gloucester Wednesday.
Cardinal Spellman 10, Bishop Fenwick 5
Nicole Modica went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the loss, while Courtney Norton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Brenneh Satterfield also had an RBI in the loss.
Fenwick (3-9) visits Matignon today.
BOYS LACROSSE
Beverly 8, Swampscott 2
EJ Eichler and Collin Walsh each scored a goal. Vincent Palmer and Kyle Fitzgerald each dished one assist.
“We gave up five goals in the first quarter,” Swampscott coach Todd Pierce said. “We made two changes on defense and we kept playing. Once we settled down after the first quarter we gave Beverly a game.”
Swampscott (2-12) visits Pentucket Wednesday.
Saugus 10, Everett 7
Christian Billingsley scored three goals and had one assist. Drew Worthley and Mario Desimone each scored twice. Nick Sanderson, Christian Heffernan and Joe Cross each scored once. Alex DeBrito made 11 saves.
Saugus hosts Lynn today (5:15).
Salem 5, Lynn 4
Salem scored the game-winner with 36 seconds to play. Shidley Belice scored twice, while Sam Ennis and Josue Matul scored once.

St. Mary’s 17, Lowell Catholic 10
Five goals each from Brendan Laundry and Davis Kinne led St. Mary’s (8-6). Joe O’Keefe scored three goals, while Christian Lebert and Collin Jackson each scored twice.
Kaden Quirk made 12 saves.
St. Mary’s, one win away from sealing a berth in the state tournament, visits Pentucket Saturday (10).
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 18, Medford 6
With the win, Swampscott (9-3) qualified for the state tournament.
“We’re all excited about making the tournament,” Swampscott coach Al Eaton said. “We’re trying to work hard this season to get a higher seed and be ready for the level of competition we’ll see there. We’re cleaning up the little things we need to improve on.”
Grace DiGrane scored four goals, while Emerson Laundry, Harper Clopton and Ocean Crawley-Sweeney each scored three goals.
Reese Robertson and Elizabeth Green each scored two goals and Mary Miles scored one goal.
Goalie Sara Hamada made five saves.
Swampscott visits Revere Wednesday (4).
Pentucket 10, Lynnfield 7
Too many turnovers at both ends of the field proved fatal for the Lynnfield girls lacrosse team. The Pioneers led 6-5 at the half, but the Sachems scored five goals and clamped down defensively in the second half to earn the come-from behind victory.
St. Mary’s 18, Lowell 10
Codi Butt scored 12 goals, notching her 300th career point. Mady Hentosh added three goals and three assists, Meg Parthum had one goal and two assists, and McKenzie Spates and Kelsie Sullivan each had one goal. Riley Flannery had three assists, Riley Lynch had one assist and Lauren Vaccaro made 12 saves.
St. Mary’s (9-8), now just one win away from the state tournament, hosts Lynnfield Saturday.
Fenwick 19, Salem 6
Senior led the way on Fenwick’s senior night. Colbi Flickinger scored five goals, Sydney Topel scored her first goal of the season and Franchesca Carpinella scored four goals.
Fenwick (6-9) hosts Newburyport Wednesday (4).

Classical’s Moses Ba won at first singles (2-6, 6-2, 10-6).
Marblehead logged wins at second singles from David Grenader (6-0, 6-1), third singles from Edoardo Bernardis (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles play, Adam Sherf and Tony Gluskin won (6-0, 6-1), and Jack Quigley and Erik Stammnitz won (6-1, 6-1).
The Magicians (11-2) host Malden Catholic Wednesday.
Classical (4-6) hosts Swampscott today.

Singles winners for Swampscott were Lily Sanphy (6-3, 6-1) and Gina Hollenbach (6-2, 6-1). Rachel Weiss and Georgia Cilley won first doubles (6-4, 6-2). Sisters Madeline and Allison Tribendis won second doubles (6-0, 6-2).

Classical’s Daphne Pineda grabbed a win at third singles (0-6, 6-4, 11-9). The Rams (6-7) play English Wednesday. Classical has to win three out of its last four matches to qualify for the state tournament.
Marblehead’s Hannah Porath won first singles (6-1, 6-0) and Simone Likterov won second singles (6-4, 6-1). Sara Weiss and Lizzy Potvin won at first doubles (4-6, 6-1, 6-2). Jessie Munroe and Tess Keaney won at second doubles (6-3, 6-0).

Christian Puleo won at third singles (8-3). The first doubles team of Sam Saunders and Jesse D’Orsi won in a tiebreaker (7-2). St. Mary’s plays Marian Wednesday.

Alexa Vittiglio won second singles (3-6, 6-4, 7-5). Bela Ferreira won third singles (4-6, 6-4, 6-1). The first doubles pair of Gillian Skelley and Emma Gallucci won (6-0, 6-2). The second doubles pair of Celeste Joly and Claire Yang won (6-1, 6-2).
Lynnfield (11-1) visits Marblehead Tuesday.

At first doubles, Abby Graumann and Tiana Iuilano won (8-0), and Maria O’Donnell and Anna Young won (8-0). At second doubles, Sarah Blessington and Maddie Williams won (8-5), and Faith Harding and Anna Krause won (8-0).
Fenwick (9-5) qualified for the state tournament with the win.
“It’s our fourth consecutive year making the tournament so we’re happy about that,” Crusaders coach Paula Hannon said.

Shaelyn Kelley was the lone Tanner to pick up a win. She defeated Audrey Jabe 6-3, 6-4 in the second singles match.

Winners for Classical were Adam Washington in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), Dajon Wilson in the long jump (19 feet, 1 inch), Ishmael Johnson in the triple jump (37 feet, 7 inches), Kevin Paniaqua in the shot put (35 feet, 11 inches), Samson Srey in the javelin (152 feet, 7 inches), Jamal Rashid in the 110 hurdles (18.0 seconds), Washington in the 100 (11.8) and Wilson in the 200 (22.6).
Salem 87, Saugus 48
First place finishers for Saugus were Ryan Pugh in the 200, Joe Alba in the long jump (17 feet, 4 1/4 inches), and Kenny Okoye in the triple jump (41 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
GIRLS TRACK
Classical 69, Winthrop 62
Winners for the Rams were Kelly Biv in the mile run (6 minutes, 30 seconds), Sam Anthony in the 110 hurdles (18 seconds), Orelys Padro Colon in the 400 meter dash (66.8), Rhode Alcindor in the 800 meter dash (2:38), Chloe Kebreau in the triple jump (32 feet, 10 inches), Paris Wilkey in the javelin (83 feet, 4 inches) and Jayla Blevins in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).
Classical (4-3) now gears up for Saturday’s NEC meet.
Saugus 93, Salem 33
Kiley Ronan won first place in the long jump (14 feet, 7 1/2 inches) and the 100 (13.4 seconds). Jada Okoye won first place in the (32 feet, 2 3/4 inches), and the 110 hurdles (17.8). Other winners were Shaylin Groark in the discus (56 feet, 11 inches), Jenni Costa in the shot put (21 feet, 8 1/2 inches), Ava Fiorino in the 400 hurdles (1:15.6), Serena Cacciola in the 200 (28.0) and Olivia Tapia-Gately in the 2-mile run. Saugus has a meet Wednesday against Winthrop.
