The St. Mary’s baseball team picked up a much-needed victory Friday afternoon, 5-3 over Lowell Catholic at Fraser Field.
Spartans starting pitcher Bobby Alcock earned the win on the mound to improve to 2-2 this season. Alcock threw five innings, tallied nine strikeouts and allowed two earned runs. Jared Coppola pitched the last two innings in relief and earned the save.
“Bobby has pitched very well,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said. “He has given us a chance to win every time out and this is the second relief appearance where Jared has shut things down.”
Aedan Leydon continued his hot streak at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
“Aedan has had two nice games for us in a row,” Dana said.
Anthony Bono went 2-for-3 and John Mulready went 1-for-2 with a RBI double.
The Spartans (2-3) continue their CCL schedule Monday night (7) when they host Cardinal Spellman at Fraser.
“Spellman always plays us tough,” Dana said. “We’re in the league again. Everybody’s battling for wins. We have to get ready and we have to get this thing moving in the right direction.”
Beverly 3, Classical 2
Clayton McAlpine, Kyle Cravatis and Nick Berry each hit a RBI single to push the Panthers to victory.
On the mound, Panthers senior left-hander Mike Brauninger pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, four hits and no walks.
Danny Lilja scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the third and added a RBI single for Classical’s two runs.
Making his first varsity start on the mound, Classica’s Aidan Dow went 5 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run.
Beverly (4-1) hosts Saugus this morning (10). Classical (2-4) hosts Peabody Monday (4).
Fenwick 6, Bedford 0
Dave Furtado got the win on the mound, throwing seven shutout innings with four strikeouts. Furtado’s 3-0 this season. Angelo McCullough, Keegan O’Connor and Nic Pignone each drove in two runs.
The Crusaders (3-1) play Georgetown today.
Peabody 14, Saugus 7
The Sachems went into the sixth inning only trailing 8-6, but a late surge by Peabody put the Tanners over the top.
Peabody (4-1) freshman Chris Faraca picked up his first varsity win, going 4 1/3 innings and tossing a two-hitter with six strikeouts while allowing three earned runs.
Jake Gustin was 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI and three runs scored while Trevor Lodi also homered, was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and drove in two runs. Eric DeMayo was 2-for-4, drove in two runs and also scored two runs.
“We started a freshman on the mound today and the older players needed to step up with some run support and good defense to help him out,” said Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt. “We were able to execute both and allow him to pitch with confidence.”
Saugus was led on offense by Jackson Stanton, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Ronnie Paolo went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Mike Mabee took the loss on the mound after going the first five innings, while Dominic Clark pitched the final two innings for the Sachems.
Saugus (3-2) is right back in action this morning on the road against Beverly.
Lynnfield 3, Masconomet 1 (F/10)
Fernando Gonzalez pitched nine innings, tallying 13 strikeouts and allowing just one hit with zero earned runs. Gonzalez added a RBI single, helping his own cause.
Matt Fiore hit a 2-RBI double in the top of the 10th inning and logged the save in the bottom of 10th for the win.
Salem 16, Winthrop 4
Salem’s Tommy Beauregard got the win on the mound. Aneudy Espinal and Troy Zippos each drove in four runs.
SOFTBALL
Classical 17, Beverly 3
Tori Adams pitched six innings, allowing no earned runs with six strikeouts. Adams went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ciara Collins led the offense with five RBI, going 2-for-5. Kayla Morrill went 3-for-5 with one RBI and Johnna Calder went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Fenwick 8, Shawsheen Tech 7
The Crusaders grabbed their first win behind seven solid innings in the circle from Nicole Modica, who allowed three earned runs. Modica went 2-for-4 at the plate, helping her own cause with a RBI.
Courtney Norton went 3-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot, and Natalie Medros went 3-for-4 with four RBI.
“It was good to get our first win,” Fenwick coach Paul Lyman said. “We were down 6-2 at one point and came back to win so it was pretty rewarding.”
Fenwick (1-3) plays a doubleheader against Monomoy at Cape Cod today (11/2).
BOYS LACROSSE
St. Mary’s 17, Martha’s Vineyard 16
Davis Kinne led the offense with five goals and three assists, while Nick Napolitano added five goals and two assists. Brendan Laundry scored four goals and dished three assists. Joe O’Keef (one goal, one assist) and Christian Lebert (two goals) also contributed to the scoring.
“The attackers really carried us today,” St. Mary’s coach Josh Field said. “The fact that our attackmen are producing, everyone’s getting their touches and that’s great to see. They’re really clicking together.”
Goalie Kaden Quirk made 11 saves, including one with seven seconds remaining to seal the win.
The Spartans (2-3) host Triton tonight (7).
GIRLS LACROSSE
Marblehead 22, Medford 2
Hadley Carlton scored five goals to lead the Marblehead offense. Caroline Driscoll and Lydia Bongiorno each scored three goals. Niamh Healy, Annie Ronan, Carter Murray and Grace Arthur each chipped in with two goals. Sara Campbell, Callie O’Neill and Grace Doody each added one goal.
The Magicians are 3-3.
St. Mary’s 16, Essex Tech 1
Codi Butt scored eight goals to pace St. Mary’s. Riley Lynch scored three goals, Madi Henstosh scored one with four assists. Mackenzie Spates and Meg Parthum each scored once. Katie Whitcomb and eighth grader Kiara LoNigro each scored their first varsity goals.
St. Mary’s (3-4) visits Winchester today (11).
BOYS TENNIS
Swampscott 5, Gloucester 0
Singles winners for the Big Blue were Sam Mayblyum (6-4, 6-1), Roger Tananka (6-2, 6-2) and Justin Ratner (6-3, 4-6, 6-1). The Swampscott doubles teams of Dan Johnson and Steve Santanello (6-3, 6-3) and Jake Petras and Isaac Green (6-0, 6-2) also logged wins.
Marblehead 5, English 0
Singles winners for Marblehead were Billy Ackerman (6-1, 6-0), Dan Litvak (6-0, 6-0) and Tony Gluskin (6-1, 6-1). The doubles teams of Mason Friedman and Adam Sherf (6-0, 6-0) and Erik Stammnitz and Ben Birnbach (6-0, 6-0) also grabbed wins.
