It was another big day for Marblehead’s Charlotte Plakans as she helped lead the Magicians softball team to a 10-1 road win over Somerville Friday afternoon. Plakans earned the win in the circle after tossing four innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts, while also going 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate. Freshman Lauren Donovan came in to close the game in the circle for Marblehead, giving up just one hit with four strikeouts over the final three innings.
Mercedes Pelletier led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI. Belle Sogoloff went 2-for-4 in the win, while Delaney Bostley went 1-for-1 in her first varsity action.
The Magicians (3-0) are back in action Tuesday against Essex Tech.
SOFTBALL
Peabody 4, Wakefield 1
Peabody (3-0) pitcher Tianna Dawe threw seven innings, striking out eight. Dawe had zero walks, two hits and one earned run. Luciana Mastromatteo was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a three-run home run.
Mystic Valley 18, Tech 4
Pitcher Theresa Mastropietro went the distance in a mercy-rule loss for Tech. Shyla Jackson played great defense at shortstop and went 2-for-3 with a RBI double. Alondra Sanchez played strong defense at third base and went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Tech (0-2) is at Pope John April 23.
BASEBALL
Marblehead 4, Haverhill 1
Marblehead’s Ben Brennan pitched five innings, allowing three hits. Cole Garaventi had two hits, two runs, and two stolen bases. Alex Rosen got the save on the mound after giving up one hit in two innings of work. Marblehead (2-0) takes on Gloucester Monday.
Saugus 7, Stoneham 1
Mike Mabee was the winning pitcher for Saugus. He tossed six innings, let up four hits, four strikeouts and no earned runs. Jackson Stanton was 3-for-4, and had one RBI. Steve Pettenati was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Paul Stamatopoulos was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The Sachems (2-0) visit Beverly Tuesday.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 16, Salem 1
The Big Blue had a big day on the offensive side of the ball, earning their second win of the season. Emerson Laundry and Ocean Crawley-Sweeney scored four goals each to lead the offense, while Reese Robertson and Myra Diaz each scored two goals. Nikki Rosa, Elizabeth Green, Mary Miles and Harper Clopton each added one goal. Goalie Grace DiGrande had three saves.
Swampscott (2-1) visits Beverly Tuesday.
Peabody 14, Quincy 2
Peabody (4-0) had 11 different players score a point. There were three different players who netted four points in Sarah Buckley (three goals, one assist), Colleen Crotty (two goals, two assists) and Olivia Kiricoples (two goals, two assists), while Danielle Diantgikis and Amber Kiricoples each scored two goals. Alex Houlden, Maddy Lomasney and Hailee Lomasney each had one goal and one assist, while Kaitlin Gorman and Abby Ryder each had one assist.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Tanners got strong performances from Catherine Manning and Alyssa Saraceni as well as freshmen Jordyn Collins and Aja Alimonte. Sydney Nagle and Olivia Lavalle combined for nine saves.
Melrose 13, St. Mary’s 6
Despite the loss, Codi Butt and Lauren Vaccaro put together strong performances. Butt scored all six of St. Mary’s goals, and goalie Vaccaro logged 12 saves. Vaccaro kept the Spartans within striking distance but Melrose pulled away in the second half for the win.
Sherly Feliz and freshman Michelle Callahan played well defensively.
The Spartans (1-4) visit Essex Tech Monday.
Lynnfield 15, Triton 9
Lynnfield senior captain Liv Smyrnios netted the 100th goal of her 4-year varsity career. Smyrnios scored five of the Pioneers’ seven first half goals, the last one being number 100 with 6:11 to play in the half. She finished with six goals, two assists and won eight draw controls. Olivia Sarni and Ashley Barrett finished with hat tricks, while Tori Morelli also scored. Goalie Grace Magno had nine saves. The Pioneers improved to 3-2 and visit Masconomet Tuesday.
Wayland 17, Marblehead 13
Grace Arthur, Caroline Driscoll and Lydia Bongiorno each scored three goals. Hadley Carlton added two goals and one assist. Niamh Healy and Callie O’Neill each scored a goal. Magicians goaltender Maeve Caldwell made 14 saves.
The Magicians are 2-3.
BOYS TENNIS
Cardinal Spellman 3, St. Mary’s 2
The Spartans got wins from Brady Ryan in first singles (6-0, 6-0) and Landis Lin in third singles (6-1, 6-4.)
St. Mary’s (0-3) will have over a week off before getting back in action against Bishop Fenwick on April 23.
GIRLS TENNIS
Lynnfield 4, Hamilton-Wenham 1
The Pioneers (2-1) notched two singles wins and swept the doubles matches. Alexa Vittiglio got the win in second singles (6-4, 6-4) while Bella Ferreira took third singles (6-0, 6-2).
In doubles play, the team of Gillian Skelley and Emma Gallucci won their match (6-0, 6-0) and the team of Makayla Masseo and Clare Yang took their match (6-1, 6-1).
Bishop Fenwick 5, Danvers 0
Fenwicks’ First singles was won by Kerry Kircher, she won (6-3, 6-2). Second singles was won by Brenna Waldinger (6-3, 6-6). Third singles was won by Anna Young (6-3, 6-6). First doubles were dominated by Abby Graumann and Tiana Iuliano (6-2, 6-1). Maria O’Donnell and Anna Krause continued the winning streak at second doubles (6-4, 6-4). Bishop Fenwick (3-1) plays Austin Prep April 25.
