LYNN — It’s called Earth Hour and the environmental initiative launched in Australia 11 years ago comes to Lynn tonight.
To provide local participation in what Regional Coordinator Juan Gonzalez called an international event, Global Embassy of Activists for Peace is inviting local and area residents to turn off as many lights as possible in their homes from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
An ecology-friendly gathering on Lynn City Hall’s steps is also scheduled for that hour with bee’s wax candles provided.
“Earth Hour is an annual environmental campaign that brings attention to the effects of climate change by asking people to turn off the lights at homes and businesses for an hour,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, drawing participation from 2.2 million homes and businesses. Earth Hour has become a global sustainability movement with more than millions of people around the world.
Global landmarks including Sydney Harbour Bridge, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum have extinguished lights for an hour to take part in the environmental awareness event.
Founded in 2012, Global Awareness takes on human rights initiatives with Gonzalez and other members hosting multiple Holocaust remembrance and awareness events locally.
