LYNN — A 53-year-old Boston man was arrested after police say he robbed a woman of the cash she withdrew from a bank ATM on Market Street and subsequently assaulted her and another man who tried to come to her aid on Thursday night.
John Banks was charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery and possession of a knife with a blade over 2 ½ inches.
Lynn Police responded to a robbery at Eastern Bank, located at 112 Market St., shortly after 7:30 p.m. and learned that a man, later identified as Banks, had robbed a woman of $500 and assaulted her and another man as they tried to stop him, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
Banks was behind the victim and grabbed the cash from her after she withdrew it from the ATM. She called for help—a man she was with tried to help, but Banks punched the man and threw both of them to the ground, Kmiec said.
Banks fled the scene and his description was shared with all police units. An officer noticed Banks a short distance away and the victims, both Lynn residents, were able to positively identify him as the man who had committed the robbery and assault, Kmiec said.
Police found the stolen cash on Banks when he was arrested.
