SWAMPSCOTT — Lawrence Murphy will serve as the high school’s interim principal while Robert Murphy is on medical leave.
The current principal will be on medical leave until April 13, according to Swampscott Superintendent Pamela Angelakis. Lawrence Murphy, who was the principal of Swampscott High from 2006-2009, will work two to three days a week on a per-diem basis.
“Larry’s extensive experience and familiarity with our district make him an excellent choice to fill a void at Swampscott High,” Angelakis said in the press release.
The interim principal taught for 15 years before he came a middle school principal, serving nine years in that role, and then completing 15 years as a high school principal. Lawrence Murphy retired as principal at West Boylston Middle High School in 2015.
Among his many accomplishments, the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association named him the Bertram H. Holland Principal of the Year in 2014. Lawrence also served on the planning and building committees for the new Swampscott High School and implemented an anti-bullying campaign at West Boylston that drew national acclaim from People magazine.
