Lynn’s own version of March Madness continued on Thursday and Friday as the 41st Annual Lynn Elementary Tournament entered into the semi final rounds.
Thursday’s first game, a Division 1 girls matchup between Ingalls and Connery, saw the first team punch their ticket to the Divisional final as Ingalls prevailed 8-1. Nallelie Acevedo was Ingalls high scorer with 4. Angellenny Perez and Marianah Pagan had a basket apiece. Naylani Lopez was Connery’s high scorer.
Next up, the lone boys game of the day, had the Ford Falcons taking on the Cougars from Cobbet. Ford was able to continue its winning streak, securing the 24-11 victory. Travis Sanchez had another standout performance for Ford (6 points). Isaiah Eze and Ntemo Buese both had five points in the win. Cobbet’s Edwin Castro was the game’s high scorer with seven points. Thierno Bah chipped in three points.
In the first of two Division 2 girls semi finals, undefeated Sewell-Anderson survived a 6-0 run in the final minutes from Aborn to claim the 12-11 victory. Jomary Lora (eight points) and Neveah Eth (four) were the high scorers for the Lady Bobcats. Mea Papazoglou, Ava Kidd and Grace Jean each scored three points for Aborn.
Thursday’s final game was a defensive battle between reigning City Champ Lynn Woods and Sisson. Despite being tied 2-2 at the half, Lynn Woods’ dreams of repeating came to an end as they fell to the Eagles, 10-4. Brooke Moloney had eight points for Sisson. The high scorers for Lynn Woods were Nyomie Vaczy, Sarah Tartarini and Marissa Stone.
Friday kicked off with a Division 1 girls game between Drewicz and Tracy. Sisters Keisha and Deleisha Perez once again dazzled for the Dolphins scoring eighteen and six points, respectively, leading their team to the 26-4 win. Engelyz Bingham was Tracy’s high scorer. Drewicz takes on Ingalls today at 12:30.
Division 1 boys action continued with Callahan taking on a deep-benched Hood squad. Callahan’s well balanced offense proved to be too much for the Hawks and the cruised to 46-12 victory. Xavier Muniz (13), Isac Medina (nine) and Camron Thornton (eight) led the way for Callahan. Limbert Thomas tallied five points and teammate Siraj Salah, three, for Hood. Callahan plays Ingalls today at 11:00 a.m.
The day’s third game had the boys of Aborn and Lincoln-Thomson meeting in the tournament for the third straight year. Lincoln, looking to capture it’s second straight Division 2 crown battled back to force the tournament’s first overtime of the year. After being tied 7-7 at the end of regulation, Lincoln scored all five OT points to secure the 12-7 win. Davante Taggart paced L-T with seven points (all in the 2nd half and overtime) and Kevin Smart had three. Giovanni Batista and Sam Phelps were among the scorers for Aborn. Lincoln takes on Sewell-Anderson today at 3:30.
Friday was capped off with another D2 boys contest with Brickett taking on Lynn Woods. The Wolves got hot at exactly the right time by pulling in their first win of the season in an offensive melee, 35-31. Marvin L’Italien Avery scored a game high 19 in the win. Jacob Beyea had eight and Sam Junta, four for Lynn Woods. Brickett’s high scorers were Marvin Perkins (11), Alex Ventura (10) and Andy Batista (eight points). Lynn Woods plays Washington today at 2:00.
