The Bishop Fenwick girls hockey team earned its sixth win of the season with an 8-3 victory at Shawsheen on Friday afternoon. Fenwick, 6-7-2, featured five different goal scorers in the win.
Gabby Davern scored two goals with two assists, Lexi McNeil scored twice and dished one assist, Amanda Blanchette scored once and distributed two assists and Jill Matucci scored one goal. Brenna Satterfield scored two goals, her first career varsity goals.
“Our first line was outstanding in the first period,” Fenwick coach Doug Anderson said. “I got to play all the girls, 21 of them participated. I didn’t play the first group for the last half of the game. It was a good win. We’re happy with it and we’re moving on.”
Goalies Cailyn Wesley and Daphne Jalbert split time in net.
The Crusaders need six points to clinch a postseason berth, with fives games remaining. They host St. Joseph’s Sunday morning (9).
“Every game’s important,” Anderson said. “We need to beat St. Joseph’s on Sunday and then we have four tough games to finish out.”
BOYS HOCKEY
Westfield 4, Marblehead 1
The long trip out to Westfield didn’t end well for Marblehead as the Magicians gave up an early lead. After Zach Titus netted a goal early in the first, the Magicians were outscored 4-0 over the course of the second and third periods to drop the game.
Marblehead (1-12-4) will host Peabody on Monday at Rockett Arena in Salem.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Marblehead 41, Classical 39
Marblehead led 27-13 at halftime before the Rams clawed back in with a second half surge. Classical had a look at the game-winner at the buzzer but the shot fell off the mark and the Magicians held on. Derek Marino scored 17 points and six rebounds and Dan Doherty added eight points. The Magicians were led on defense by Seamus Keaney, Chris Gally and Billy Ackerman.
“Classical beat us at the buzzer last year,” Magicians coach Mike Giardi said. “They had a chance to win the game at the end there. We were fortunate because they were feeling pretty good at the end of that game.”
The Magicians (11-6) host Malden Tuesday (7).
Classical’s Dyrrell Rucker and Edwin Solis each scored 13 points. The Rams host English Tuesday (7).
St. Mary’s 71, Lowell Catholic 43
Joey Abate-Walsh led St. Mary’s with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Jalen Echevarria scored 12 points and Onias Mirbel added 10 points off the bench.
The Spartans (13-2) host St. John’s Prep Monday night (7).
“That’s a big game for us,” Spartans coach Dave Brown said. “It’ll be nice to see where we stand against one of the top teams in the state.”
Arlington Catholic 65, Fenwick 54
Nik Pignone scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jack Bowers 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Fenwick (3-13) visits Georgetown Tuesday night (6:30).
Lynnfield 63, Triton 49
The Pioneers (14-3) clinched the Cape Ann League Kinney Division title with a big road win. Lynnfield led by just five, 43-38 going into the final quarter, but outscored the Vikings 20-11 to seal the win. The Pioneers, who hit eight 3-pointers, were led by their three senior captains – Billy Arseneault (19 points), Zach Shone (13 points) and Dan Jameson (12 points). Senior Jay Ndansi hit three threes and also finished in double figures with 11 points.
St. John’s Prep 89, Malden Catholic 51
Behind 19 points from Nate Hobbs, the Eagles earned another win and improved to 13-4 on the year. Matt Relihan, Tommy O’Neill and Liam Dunfee each had 14 points in the win, while Jarnel Snow-Guzman added 10 points. The Prep has a big non-conference matchup with St. Mary’s at the Conigliaro Gym on Monday.
Malden Catholic was led by Chris MacDonald, who had 14 points. Jack O’Brien added nine points in the loss. The Lancers will host Swampscott on Sunday.
Beverly 67, Peabody 60
Despite 14 points and six rebounds from Jake Irvine, the Tanners couldn’t get over the hump in a Northeastern Conference showdown in Beverly on Friday night. Joe O’Neill added 13 points in the loss, while Jake Gustin played a great all-around game.
Peabody (10-7) plays on the road in Gloucester on Tuesday night.
Saugus 67, Swampscott 65
Joe Lusso scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, Mike Mabee hit a go-ahead three-pointer with just 22 seconds remaining and Vinny Cirame iced the game with two free throws as the Sachems earned a win at home Friday night. The win was a crucial one, as it qualifies Saugus for the state tournament under the Sullivan Rule.
Mabee finished the game with 12 points, while Cirame ended up with nine points.
The Sachems (4-13) play on the road in Salem on Tuesday.
Somerville 73, Salem 62
The Witches dropped to below .500 with the loss on Friday. Vinny Gaskins led the way with 18 points for Salem, while Henny Vlaun and Galvin Gonzalez each had 12 points. Nate Lebron added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Salem (8-9) will host Saugus on Tuesday.
