The Salem boys basketball team defeated Greater Lawrence, 81-50, on Tuesday night for its fourth victory in a row. Nate Lebron scored 21 points with seven rebounds and Ethan Espinal added 14 points. Isaiah Williamson logged a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Vinnie Gaskins added 10 points and seven rebounds to the winning effort.
The Witches improved to 6-2 and host Gloucester tonight (7).
“We’ve been playing well,” Salem coach Tom Doyle said. “Hopefully we can keep it going. We have some tough league games coming up, starting with Gloucester. We play Beverly and Marblehead soon so we still have the meat of our schedule coming.”
Tech 47, Minuteman 32
Belmin Berilo scored 12 points and Amari Gaston added 10. Tech improved to 5-4 and visits Essex Tech Friday.
Essex Tech 58, Saugus 51
Mike Mabee led the Sachems with 16 points, Christian Correia added 14 and Vinnie Cirame tallied 10. Saugus (1-5) hosts Danvers Saturday.
“We’re getting better,” Saugus coach Mark Bertrand said. “We kept it close throughout. We’re starting to buy into what we’re doing. That’s two games in a row, Gloucester and tonight, where we were in it in the fourth quarter.”
Somerville 75, Winthrop 71
The Vikings almost pulled out a comeback win but fell short in the final minute. Tayjuan McKenzie scored 28 points and Devin Pulsifer added 24.
“I’m proud of my guys and the way we fought back,” Winthrop coach David Sacco said. “Anytime you’re down 16 to start the fourth and battle back to make it a one-possession game, I’ll take it. We have to stop digging ourselves into holes. We need to be able to play 32 minutes at maximum effort.”
Salem Academy 50, Pioneer Charter 49
Michael Santana (5 points, 5 assists) hit a layup with just over 10 seconds remaining to give Salem a 3-point lead, and Pioneer came up short in the final seconds. Ali Kachmer had a big night with 28 points and seven rebounds for Salem, and Joe Daoud added 10.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Minuteman 47, Tech 44
The Tigers held a lead, but saw it slip away as Minuteman forced OT. Tech got the ball after a missed free throw with a couple of seconds on the clock, but couldn’t get a shot off.
Arianna Anaya lead the way with 19 points, while Michayla Lawrence tallied 12.
The Tigers (2-8) play Fellowship Friday.
Danvers 40, Marblehead 19
Danvers’ Cheyenne Nessinger scored 13 points with a handful of blocked shots. Danvers improved to 7-1.
“We have depth,” Danvers coach Pat Veilleux said. “We still haven’t hit our stride yet but we’re improving and that’s all that matters.”
The Falcons host Saugus Thursday.
“Saugus is playing good basketball,” Veilleux said. “That’s a good team and it’ll be a good challenge for us.”
For Marblehead, Kathryn Percy scored six points. Emily Clough added eight rebounds, while Hannah Garthe had three steals. The Magicians will play Medford this evening.
Pioneer Charter 47, Salem Academy 35
Hannah McGee led Salem with 12 points, and Erika Zenga added 11 points and five assists.
SWIMMING
Marblehead 107, Gloucester 71
Winners for the Magicians included the 200 medley relay team of Theo Chemel, Charles Alexander, Lucas Perez and Brian Coleman (1:54.65), Megan Hathaway in the 200 freestyle (2:04.78), Amanda Wager in the 200 IM (2:16.75) and the backstroke (1:09.16), Brian Coleman in the 50 freestyle (24.04), Carter Murray in the diving, Chemel in the 100 freestyle (57.84),
and the 200 freestyle relay team of Hathaway, Wager, Catarina Corelli and Talia Orenstein.
The Magicians are 6-0 and swim against Danvers Thursday.
“The sportsmanship and the camaraderie between the teammates has been great,” Magicians coach Susan Guertin said. “It’s great. It’s a very young team, we have a lot of freshmen this season.”
Danvers 94, Revere 84
The Falcons moved to 5-1. Danvers had two double-winners on the night, with Raphael Hicaro winning both to 50 and 100 freestyle and Jared Casey winning the 100 backstroke and the 200 freestyle. Tyler Keyes won the 100 butterfly, Ethan Keyes won the 500 freestyle and Jack O’Neill took first place in diving.
BOYS TRACK
Revere 73, Gloucester 13
It was a clean sweep for the Patriots as they improved to 2-4. Lucas Barbosa was a double-winner for Revere, taking both the high jump (5-6) and the 50-yard hurdles (6.8). Other winners for the Patriots were Kevin Bardhi in the shot put (39-5 1/2), Yussuf Ali Buda in the 50 dash (6.2), Adrien Martinez in the 300 (42.3), Jose Agudelo in the 600 (1:35.1), Cristian Acuna in the 1000 (3:03.6), Abu Aldarazy in the one-mile (5:07.2) and Jonathan Nushi in the two-mile (11:59.5).
Salem 56, Winthrop 29
The Witches got wins from Julio Fernandez in the shot put (37-1/4), Bryan Benitez-Dejesus in the 50 hurdles (8.2), Brandon O’Yarvide in the 600 (1:35.8), Julian Beaudoin in the 1000 (3:19.4) and Saul De Leon in the two-mile (11:53.8).
Kim Haddar was a double-winner for the Vikings, taking the high jump (5-2) and the 300 (41.4). Winthrop also got wins from Bobby Hubert in the 50 dash (6.1) and Cormac McPhail in the one-mile (5:02.0).
GIRLS TRACK
Gloucester 48, Revere 37
Winners for the Fishermen were Belle Muller in the shot put (26-9), Lauren Wood in the 50 hurdles (8.7), Sedona Gillard in the 50 dash (6.9), Darcy Muller in the 300 (48.3), Lila Olson in the 600 (2:00.9) and Aidan Cunningham in the one-mile (6:39.2).
Revere got wins from Azra Lakacha in the high jump (4-6), Hannah Fitzpatrick in the 1000 (3:14.0) and Olivia Novoselsky in the two-mile (14:56.9).
Winthrop 71, Salem 5
Winthrop won all but one event. Isabella Mahoney won both the high jump (4-8) and the 50 dash (6.8) to lead the way for the Vikings, while Daniella Zanelli won the 50 hurdles (8.0), Alex Gibbons won the 300 (55.3), Gabrielle Hinchion won the 600 (2:07.8), Camilla Miranda-Lllovera won the 1000 (3:43.6) and Anyra Silva won the one-mile (7:05.6).
The lone winner for Salem was Anyfem Gonzalez in the shot put (26-5).
