GIRLS HOCKEY
Marblehead 3, Bishop Fenwick 2
The Magicians have now won four in a row after taking down Fenwick in a close game at McVann-O’Keefe Memorial Rink on Sunday morning.
The Magicians (4-1) came out hot and grabbed a 3-0 lead after less than five minutes in the first period. Bella Peters scored first, with assists from Sydney Cresta and Grace Moroney. Two minutes later, Cresta made it 2-0 (Moroney assist) and then it was Moroney’s turn, with assists from Cresta and Peters.
The Crusaders cut into the lead in the final minutes of the period on a goal from Gabby Davern (assist from Lexi McNeil). Fenwick made things really interesting with 8:55 to play in the third, as Amanda Blanchette scored with an assist from McNeil to make it 3-2. But Fenwick (4-2) couldn’t find the equalizer. Marblehead goalie Grace Bertagna racked up 15 saves.

BOYS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 3, Winchester 1
The string of tough games continues for the Spartans, and they continue to respond. Just days after grinding out wins over 2017 Super 8 contenders Austin Prep and Hingham, St. Mary’s took down fellow Division 1 North tournament participant Winchester at O’Brien Arena on Saturday.
Jared Coppola, Nick Napolitano and Anthony Bono were the goal scorers in the win for the Spartans.
St. Mary’s (3-1-3) isn’t slowing down anytime soon, as the next matchup will be against Catholic Central League rival Bishop Fenwick on Wednesday night at Connery Rink.
Swampscott 4, Dracut/Tyngsboro 4
It was a true back-and-forth battle at the Ice Center Rink in Salem, N.H. on Saturday night, and it was only appropriate that the game ended in a draw. The Big Blue appear to be finally finding goal-scorers other than Brett Benoit and Steve Santanello, although both did register points in this one. Zach Elwell, Dom Codispoti and Casey Williamson each had one goal and one assist, while Santanello scored one goal. Benoit, Conor Donovan, Drew Olivieri and Thomas O’Keefe each had one assist. Goaltender Dan Johnson had 23 saves in the draw.
Swampscott (2-2-3) will have a full week off before hosting Somerville on Saturday night at Salem State’s Rockett Arena.

Bishop Feehan 2, Marblehead 0

Lynnfield 1, North Reading 0
A loss in the Kasabuski Christmas Classic championship game earlier in the week only temporarily slowed the red-hot Pioneers, as Lynnfield was right back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon at McVann-O’Keefe.
The lone goal was scored by Will Garofoli on assists by Kyle Nekoroski and Chris Flannery.
Lynnfield (6-1-0) will take on Peabody back at McVann on Saturday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Masconomet 62, Marblehead 60
It came down to the final seconds, but the Magicians couldn’t complete the comeback at home against the Chieftains Saturday. Marblehead trailed by two points with 11.2 seconds left but couldn’t force overtime, dropping to 3-3 on the year.
Prior to the game, the Magicians honored former Marblehead hoops captain Matt Wetherbee. Wetherbee suffered a spinal cord injury in 2016 while playing basketball in a men’s league and was paralyzed from the shoulders down.
Marblehead will be back in action on Friday when they host Medford.
