The Fenwick girls hockey team turned in a dominant performance Thursday evening to capture the St. Joseph Christmas Tournament championship at Warrior Arena in Boston, topping St. Peter Marian, 6-2, in the finale.
Senior captain Amanda Blanchette had the hot hand, logging a hat trick with two assists. Blanchette’s linemate Gabby Davern added two goals and an assist. Shannon Nagy added the other goal.
Fenwick jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one and a 4-0 lead after two. St. Peter Marian made it a little interesting with two goals in the third, but Fenwick responded with two of its own to put the game away.
Goalie Cailyn Wesley was strong in net, which is par for the course for the Crusaders this season.
The win puts Fenwick at 4-1 heading into a big test against Marblehead Sunday morning.
“We have a little more depth this year, a solid defense and terrific goalkeeper. We have two lines playing well, in the past, we’ve only had one,” Fenwick coach Doug Anderson said.
Anderson credits defensemen Allie Giguere (a senior captain from Lynn), Rachel Boylan, Jill Matucci and Allison Countie with solidifying the back line. Blanchette, Davern and Lexi McNeil have been a formidable first line.
“But we have a long way to go,” Anderson added. “The competition gets a lot tougher from here on out, starting with Sydney Cresta and Marblehead. We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves.”
