The English boys basketball team got a win on the road for first-year coach Antonio Anderson in its season opener Friday, holding off Malden, 68-59.
Alonzo Linton led the way for the Bulldogs with 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Ademide Badmus was big on the boards in logging a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Louis Rivera added 13 points and Javonte Edwards scored 11 points with eight rebounds. The Bulldogs are back in action on Monday when they visit NEC newcomer Somerville
St. Mary’s 55, Arlington Catholic 39
The Spartans got a great performance from newcomer Joey Abate-Walsh. The junior forward scored 18 points in the victory. Junior guard Jalen Echevarria added 13 points in the win.
The Spartans (2-0) will take on BC High on Thursday night.
Lynnfield 61, Pentucket 59 (OT)
The Pioneers improved to 2-0 with an overtime win at home, but it wasn’t easy. Senior captains Billy Arseneault (23 points) and Zach Shone (18 points) led the way with Arseneault being the man of the hour in overtime. With the score tied at 63 all after regulation, Arseneault scored six of the Pioneers’ eight overtime points to clinch the win.
Marblehead 69, Swampscott 37
The Magicians opened up their 2017 season just as they wanted to, with 13 of 14 players registering points in the victory. The scoring was led by Dewey Millett, who dropped 12 points. Derek Marino added 10 points in the win.
Marblehead (1-0) will host Saugus on Monday.
Everett 93, Saugus 39
Mike Mabee was the leading scorer for the Sachems on Friday with 16 points. Saugus (0-1) will look to get into the win column on Monday against Marblehead.
Salem 56, Danvers 33
Salem got 16 points from Ethan Espinal in the win, while Nate Lebron added 10 points. Isaiah Williamson also had a big game, filling up the stat sheet with seven points and 14 rebounds.
Salem (1-0) will try to make it two in a row on Monday against NEC newcomer Medford.
Beverly 79, Winthrop 46
The Vikings fall to 1-1 on the young season. Tayjuan McKenzie led Winthrop with 10 points while Alex Dernier added 9. The Panthers are 1-0 to start the year.

Peabody 89, Somerville 80
The Tanners grabbed two relay wins on the day, with the team of Cana Teague, Michaelena Teague, William Connolly and Anthony Minichillo winning the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Cana Teague, Lily Bromberger, Lauren MacPhail and Stephanie McLean winning the 200 freestyle relay and the team of Michaelena Teague, MacPhail Bailey Lopes and Kirsten Currie winning the 400 freestyle relay.
In the individual events, Minichillo won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, Michaelena Teague won the 200 freestyle and Currie won the 500 freestyle.
