WRENTHAM — Like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, and, later, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, Tristan Shelgren of St. John’s Prep has undoubtedly been staring at Newton North’s Andrew Mah all season — just waiting for the opportunity to settle state cross country supremacy once and for all.
The days of reckonning began last week in Wrentham when Shelgren won the Eastern Mass. 3.1-mile cross country race over Mah. And Shelgren repeated his triumph in the all-states, besting Mah 15:15.82 to .8 to 17:37.82.
Mah was actually closer to the third-place finisher, Lucas Aramburu of Brookline, who clocked in at 15:45.86.
Thanks to Shelgren, The Prep finished 10th in Division 1 with an average of 16:38.98. Prep rival St. John’s of Shrewsbury topped the team field.
Claudio Rocha of Peabody was 38th in Division 1 with 16:28.88.
For the girls in Division 1 , Ashley Foley of Beverly was ninth with an 18:53.92.
In Division 2, Bishop Fenwick finished 13th.
