St. Mary’s bid to make its second straight Massachusetts football Super Bowl was denied this afternoon by Mashpee in a 28-20 loss at Braintree High.
The Spartans, 10-1, fell in a seesaw game that saw Mashpee, 11-0, scored just before the half to make it 20-14.
A Calvin Johnson-to-James Brumfield pass tied it in the third quarter, but Mashpee responded right away with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to take a lead it never relinquished.
St. Mary’s concludes its season Wednesday (7) at home against Bishop Fenwick.
Meanwhile, there is a Lynn school that will keep playing beyond Thanksgiving. Lynn Tech saw to that with a 41-6 over Franklin County Tech in the opening round of the state vocational tournament this morning at Manning Field. Steffan Gravely scored three touchdowns for the 10-1 Tigers.
Tech will play in the final at Nashoba Nov. 30 at a time to be determined. Before that, though, the Tigers will go to Austin Prep on Thanksgiving Eve (6).
