PEABODY — Portable toilets serve a function, especially if you’re working on a job site with nowhere else to go.
But some city councilors say port-a-potties aren’t the best “Welcome to Peabody” sign.
Ward 4 Councilor Ed Charest wants the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to remove one offending portable toilet from Lowell Street near the Route 128 onramp.
“It’s the first thing that people see when they get off the highway,” said Charest at Thursday’s City Council meeting. “This is one of the gateways to the city. I don’t want it so one of the first things people see when they come into the city be a port-a-potty.”
MassDOT said someone would look into the offending toilet.
Charest said Councilor-at-Large and state Rep. Thomas Walsh (D-Peabody) was looking into getting the toilet removed from the city’s roadway.
“We do it all, Mr. President,” Walsh told Council President Joel Saslaw.
