Ward 1 City Councilor Wayne Lozzi is urging the city to convert streetlights to LED lighting which is expected to reduce energy costs and improve safety for motorists.
On Tuesday, the City Council heard from the state’s Department of Energy Resources (DOER) about the Rapid LED Streetlight Conversion program.
The initial investment would cost the city about $2 million. A DOER grant would cover one-third of the cost and the city would issue a bond to pay for the rest.
“LED streetlights are more energy efficient and longer-lasting than other common street lighting technologies; converting will save the Lynn more than $400,000 annually on it’s electric bill and in operations and maintenance,” said Lozzi in a statement.
The measure must be approved by the mayor’s office and the Council.
