It was a tough battle through all three sets for St. Mary’s on Monday afternoon, but the Spartans were able to pull it out with scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-21 to sweep Pope John in Volleyball, 3-0.
Sophomore Gabby Torres had a huge game on the back line, notching 14 service points and four aces. Freshman Alyssa Grossi had a solid all-around performance with four kills and two blocks at the net.
Marblehead 3, Swampscott 0
The Big Blue had a tough night, falling in straight sets 18-25, 13-25, 16-25. Junior Alexa Winter had a solid performance in the loss with seven kills and three blocks.
Swampscott (5-5) will go up against Peabody this afternoon.
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Beverly 2
Despite falling behind 2-0, the Panthers battled back to force a full five-setter before falling to Hamilton-Wenham in the end.
Senior hitter Katie Noonan had nine kills and four aces to pace the offense for Beverly, while senior Julia Gebhardt had five kills and two aces. Senior Maddy Cassidy had five aces and senior Delaney Sprague had three blocks.
“I am very proud of the way we played today, but we can be even better if we don’t put ourselves in that hole,” said Beverly coach Pam Padovani. “We are excited to take the things we did really well to practice tomorrow and our next match.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Beverly 3, Swampscott 0
After finishing the entire first half and much of the second half deadlocked at 0-0, the Panthers finally broke through with their first goal in the 62nd minute en route to a win.
Behind some great play in the midfield for Swampscott, the Big Blue was able to keep the powerful Beverly offense off the scoreboard for the majority of the game. Sydney Clark, Grace DiGrande, Kendra Fitzgerald, Alison Tribendis, Sarah Tribendis and Jackie Frisoli were among the players who defended the midfield well all game long.
Swampscott will play a road game against Danvers on Friday evening.
Gloucester 3, Classical 0
Hannah Guthrie, Kacey Rouse and Chloe Kebreau played well on defense in the loss that drops the Rams to 4-6. Classical is back at it Wednesday in Saugus.
Peabody 8, Somerville 1
Behind a 5-point night from Emily Nelson (three goals, two assists), the Tanners rolled to a big win on Monday. Jillian Arigo had two goals and one assist, while Aja Alimonte, Amber Kiricoples and Kolby Alves each scored one goal. Megan Edmonds, Ava Marotta, Sarah Buckley, and Erin Melin played well defensively and goalkeeper Jordan Muse had six saves in the win.
The Tanners are now 5-2-2 on the year with a 3-1-1 record in the Northeastern Conference.
BOYS SOCCER
Classical 1, Gloucester 1
Melvin Tse scored the lone goal for the Rams while keeper Daniel Cortes contributed with another stellar performance in net. Classical coach Domenick Steadman applauded Nate Mace Rateau, Ivan Melara, Albin Asani and Chris Zelaya for leading the way on the defensive end as the Rams are currently dealing with injuries. The tie places Classical at 3-5-2 on the season and the Rams are back in action on Thursday night when they host Winthrop.

At Gannon, the Spartans pulled into a tie with the Cougars in the Catholic Central League with the win.
