The Saugus girls soccer team blanked Winthrop, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 9-0 on the season. More importantly, however, is that the win guarantees the Sachems a spot in the state tournament.
“It feels good to be in the state tournament,” Saugus coach Chris Coviello said. “We’re playing well and it feels good. It takes the pressure off the team.”
Alivia Burke and Allie Kotkowski led the way for Saugus with two goals each. Rachel Nazzaro also scored a goal. In net, keeper Alana Aldred made two saves for the shutout win.
“Defensively, we’re strong,” Coviello said. “We don’t give up too many shots on goal. We smother teams before they get down to our end. We eventually wear them down and we score goals.”
Saugus will aim to remain undefeated on Thursday afternoon when the Sachems visit Gloucester.
Marblehead 4, Medford 1
The Magicians built a 3-1 lead in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second half for the win. Carter Murray led the way with two goals while Lily Gregory and Lexi Bostley each added a goal. Murray, Grace Arthur and Meghan Cronin each dished assists in the win.
“I am happy with the way that the girls are playing,” Magicians assistant coach Jenna Dailey said. “We are working to keep them momentum going as we get ready for Swampscott on Thursday.”
The Magicians are 2-3-1 on the season.

Goals for the Tigers were scored by Bibek Gurung, Dani Zacarias and freshman Ashby Murphy, who logged a hat trick. Tech goalie Jeisson Alarcon also played well in the win.
“Our passing game was solid,” Tech coach Jeremy McKeen said.
The Tigers improve to 5-3-1 on the season and are back in action on Thursday against Commonwealth Athletic Conference foe Greater Lowell.
Somerville 4, Peabody 1
Gio Lumaj scored the lone goal for the Tanners. Peabody trailed 3-0 before Lumaj found the back of the net. Somerville then answered with a goal to ice the win. Peabody senior goalkeeper Troy Cappos finished the game with 10 saves.
With the loss, Peabody drops to 4-3-1 on the season. The Tanners will hope to bounce back on Thursday when they host Medford.
“We have to create more offense,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “I can’t take anything away from Somerville, that’s an excellent team. We just didn’t move the ball well and we played with the ball in our end for most of the game. We have to create more offense.”
