The Saugus boys soccer team continued to roll as the Sachems trounced Winthrop, 4-1, on Monday afternoon. Saugus goals were scored by Jonathan Rodrigues and Ryan Pugh. Rodrigues and Pugh each scored twice in the win to power the Sachems offense. “We played pretty sloppy at the beginning of the game. We were testing the keeper and then finally Jonathan and Ryan stepped up. They got the momentum going.”
In net, goalie Juan Lopez earned the win. Guilherme Vaz led the Sachems on defense.
Saugus improves to 5-2 on the season with the win, the team’s fourth victory in a row.
“We’ve been consistent,” Bolduc said. “That’s what I wanted to achieve at the beginning of the season. Things are clicking everywhere. Our defense is a solid core. It’s all clicking for us, on all areas of the field. That’s what we need to do for these wins to keep happening.”
Saugus is back in action next Friday when the team battles Pope John.
Masco 3, Lynnfield 0
With the loss, the Pioneers drop to 5-3-1 on the season. “I actually thought we played well,” Pioneers coach Brent Munroe said. “We created a good amount of chances and got some shots off. They converted on their chances and we didn’t convert on ours.”
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Amesbury.
Tech 5, KIPP 1
Geo Ramirez, Edson Alas and Dani Zacarias were the goal scorers for Tech. The Tigers will hope to carry some momentum into this afternoon’s battle against Minuteman.
GIRLS SOCCER
St. Mary’s 1, Fenwick 1
Spartans freshman Susannah Cornell scored a goal to put St. Mary’s ahead 1-0 at halftime. Fenwick battled back to tie the game in the last 10 minutes of play.
Spartans coach Jim Foley credited Morgan Mackey, Gaby Diaz-Martinez and goalie Alex Iacoviello for solid performances.
“It was a great, competitive high school game. We were playing great but we had a little lapse and that’s when they capitalized.
The tie does, however, bring St. Mary’s a moral victory in that it’s the first time the Spartans have brought back a point from a game at Fenwick in 11 years. St. Mary’s is now 4-3-3 on the season and hosts Arlington Catholic on Wednesday.
“We tied them the last time we played them. It’s a battle every night in our league. That’s a good team so we have to come ready to play.”

Cardinal Spellman 3, St. Mary’s 1
The Spartans fell to the Cardinals by set scores of 8-25, 25-22, 11-25 and 17-25. St. Mary’s coach Erin Menard highlighted two of her players for strong performances despite the loss.
